O seguimos en una vieja economía que produce básicamente commodities o productos industriales de baja o media tecnología, donde la volatilidad de los precios de su producción, fijados por otros, somete a nuestra economía a fluctuaciones cíclicas no deseadas, que se reflejan negativamente en el bienestar de la población. Esto es, nos damos por vencidos y seguimos un camino que profundice el fracaso. O, Uruguay toma una alternativa más promisoria. En ésta, la economía debería pasar de la forma más perentoria, a una economía que se base en mayor proporción en la incorporación de conocimiento, ciencia, tecnología e innovación destinadas a la producción de sus bienes y servicios, de un valor único y mayor valor agregado. Una oportunidad de transformar nuestro país, en etapas, pero con un rumbo claro y un futuro esperanzador para el bienestar de la sociedad.

Con esta antología se recuperan las principales contribuciones que el Instituto de Sociología de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile hizo al desarrollo de la disciplina en su largo ciclo fundacional que abarca sus primeras cuatro décadas de existencia. Se han recopilado los esfuerzos originales de veintiún profesores, quienes, bajo la senda abierta por su fundador, el sacerdote jesuita Roger Vekemans, investigaron ampliamente y con diversas metodologías las limitaciones estructurales de los procesos de modernización que se impulsaron en el país en esas décadas. Los límites de estos procesos no fueron solamente estructurales, sino también culturales. El Instituto de Sociología ofreció un amplio espacio para una crítica cultural de la modernización que tuvo su momento culminante en las investigaciones de Pedro Morandé, pero que contó también con una variedad de antecedentes y repercusiones en investigaciones específicas sobre la cultura nacional y latinoamericana. Sea bajo la impronta del estructuralismo en boga o de una sociología de la cultura en ciernes, el Instituto de Sociología de aquellos años construyó una trayectoria y un prestigio en investigación social que esta antología pretende recordar en una versión de conjunto que muestra la diversidad de sus esfuerzos, pero, al mismo tiempo, su unidad en el propósito de hacer nacer y consolidar la sociología en nuestro país.
