This lucidly written study is unique in that there is no book extant by an economic historian that discusses Talmudic economics in the light of modern economics. Its major focus is on the intricate debates, statements and principles that were forged by the Talmudic Rabbis. This ancient storehouse of learning includes a wealth of economic knowledge of modern sophistication. The book taps these "economic treasures" by way of analytic inquiry. The authors, both economic historians and economists, through their study of the original dialectics in the Talmud, were able to discern a wide range of macro- and micro-economic ideas of major significance. These concepts when viewed from either a contemporary or a modern perspective, display an extraordinary degree of insight and sophistication. Indeed, sections of the Talmud and the reflections of subsequent commentators on those passages, embody a wealth of economic thought that was later to become significant in the reasoning of political economists, or of their professional academic successors.

On March 17, 2015, Brill was informed that the article by Francisco Gómez Camacho S. J., "Later Scholastics: Spanish Economic Thought in the XVIth and XVIIth Centuries," in Ancient and Medieval Economic Ideas and Concepts of Social Justice, ed. S. Todd Lowry and Barry Gordon (Leiden: Brill, 1998), pp. 503-561 suffers from serious citation problems and that in some cases the original sources are never mentioned at all. It goes without saying that Brill strongly disapproves of such practices, which represent a serious breach of publication integrity. Brill condemns any violation of the authors' rights and the copyrights of the publishers, and distances itself from these practices. As a result Brill cannot stand behind the noted material as originally contained in this volume and for these reasons formally retracts the article by Francisco Gómez Camacho and also the volume. The volume will no longer be available in its current form. (Blurb: 13 scholars contribute to this survey of past discussions of the workings of economic structures and of justice in interpersonal relations, cultural institutions and the social order. They investigate the sources in each historic period from the world of the Old Testament and the ancient Greeks through to Spanish scholasticism and its offshoots in the Spanish Americas of the 18th century and relate the ideas of writers from the past to modern discussions.)

Economics Ethics And Religion written by R. Wilson and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-02-24 with Business & Economics categories.

There is a revival of interest by economists in ethical issues and beliefs, and by moral philosophers and theologians in economics. This book is intended to make a contribution to this cross-fertilisation of ideas. Rodney Wilson has undertaken an extensive survey of Jewish, Christian and Muslim views on economics, and reviewed the rapidly expanding business ethics literature from a religious perspective. The juxtaposition of the work of theologians and moral philosophers with that of economists results in some interesting comparisons.

The economic analysis of religion is a new field in Economics, and the Economics of Judaism is emerging as an even newer subfield. Economics has entered the social science literature on religion in general and on Judaism in particular. Religion has entered the literature of Economics and Economic Demography as an interesting and important subject for analysis. The Economics of Judaism has moved from being a novelty at the margins of each of these fields to being an important area of inquiry in which there are many useful insights and new questions to be posed regarding Judaism, religion, and economic behaviors in general. The authors of the articles in this volume have applied different methods of economic analysis to Judaism as a religion and as a way of life. The articles are presented in three groups, according to their objectives and to the methods applied; to understand the full costs and benefits of Jewish life; to view Judaism itself from the perspective of its economic characteristics; and to consider the economic aspects of Jewish communities from an historical perspective. Each paper uses the methodology best suited to the particular task at hand. Together they illustrate various ways that economic analysis complements the insights provided by other fields of study to enhance our understanding of Jewish experience.--Cover.

The Economics Of The Mishnah written by Jacob Neusner and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-01-23 with Business & Economics categories.

In this compelling study, Jacob Neusner argues that economics is an active and generative ingredient of the system of the Mishnah. The Mishnah directly addresses such economic concerns as the value of work, agronomics, currency, commerce and the marketplace, and correct management of labor and of the household. In all its breadth, the Mishnah poses the question of the critical place occupied by the economy in society under God's rule. The Economics of the Mishnah is the first book to examine the place of economic theory generally in the Judaic system of the Mishnah. Jacob Neusner begins by surveying previous work on economics and Judaism, the best known being Werner Sombart's The Jews and Modern Capitalism. The mistaken notion that Jews have had a common economic history has outlived the demise of Sombart's argument, and it is a notion that Neusner overturns before discussing the Mishnaic economics. Only in Aristotle, Neusner argues, do we find an equal to the Mishnah's accomplishment in engaging economics in the service of a larger systemic statement. Neusner shows that the framers of the Mishnah imagined a distributive economy functioning through the Temple and priesthood, while also legislating for the action of markets. The economics of the Mishnah, then, is to some extent a mixed economy. The dominant, distributive element in this mixed economy, Neusner contends, derives from the belief that the Temple and its designated castes on earth exercise God's claim to the ownership of the holy land. He concludes by considering the implications of the derivation of the Mishnah's economics from the interests of the undercapitalized and overextended farmer.

The Mishnah written by Jacob Neusner and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Religion categories.

Jacob Neusner looks at the Mishnah not as an inert collection of traditions passed on, but as a deliberate, programmatic statement of Judaism's way of life and world view. By paying attention to how the Mishnah uses traditions for its own purposes the interpreter can appreciate the building blocks of Judaism: its politics, economics, and philosophy.
