Excerpt from Economic Determinism: Or the Economic Interpretation of History "Economic Determinism" is one of four phrases which are used interchangeably by modem writers in referring to a sociological law which is the joint discovery of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels and was first given to the world in the year 1848. The other phrases used for the same idea are "The Materialistic Conception of History," "Historical Materialism," and "The Economic Interpretation of History." The classic statement of the principle in the words of Frederick Engels is as follows: "That in every historical epoch, the prevailing mode of economic production and exchange, and the social organization necessarily following from it, form the basis upon which is built up, and from which alone can be explained, the political and intellectual history of that epoch; that consequently the whole history of mankind (since the dissolution of primitive tribal society, holding land in common ownership) has been a history of class struggles, contests between exploiting and exploited, ruling and oppressed classes; that the history of these class struggles forms a series of evolution in which, now-a-days, a stage has been reached where the exploited and oppressed class - the proletariat - cannot attain its emancipation from the sway of the exploiting and ruling class - the bourgeoisie - without, at the same time, and once and for all, emancipating society at large from all exploitation, oppression, class-distinctions and class struggles." The phrase usually employed by the author of the present work is "The Economic Interpretation of History," but as this exact phrase has been used as the title of a work by Professor Seligman, we have, with the author's consent, used the shorter title for this book. Structure Of Marx S World View written by John McMurtry and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-08 with Political Science categories.

This book sets forth a clear and systematic approach to Marx's thought that finally makes possible a coherent interpretation of all of his published works. Although Marx's philosophy is usually regarded as one of the most influential ever written, its seeming ambiguities and contradictions have long puzzled readers. By uncovering the framework that unifies the writings of Karl Marx, John McMurtry has made an advance of signal importance for all areas of Marxian studies. The many valuable features of Professor McMurtry's analysis include clear, coordinated definitions of all concepts central to Marx's thought. Closely reasoned explanations illuminate such controversial theories and positions as economic determinism, ideology, and the laws of society and history. Here, too, are definitive formulations of Marx's generally neglected or denied theories of human nature, technological determinism, and mind, plus precise delineations of his stands on traditional political and philosophical questions. The author contrasts Marx's ideas with those of other important thinkers and provides a systematic survey of standard objections that refutes many of Marx's best-known critics and disciples. In addition, Professor McMurtry offers a precise critique of the historical genesis and economic and political structures of "Marxist" societies. Throughout, direct reference to the texts and concrete illustrations explain all relevant concepts, positions, and issues. Originally published in 1978. Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Sociology - General and Theoretical Directions, grade: 2.1 (B), Oxford University (New College), language: English, abstract: The study of capitalism is a predominant theme in both Marx’s and Weber’s writings. In conjunction with Marx’s “Capital”, “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism” by Weber constitutes one of the two great theories of capitalism. However, one has to note that both have written a great deal on the theories of capitalism. Both writers focus on the historical and causal forces shaping capitalist society, but where Marx believed in “economic determinism”, Weber also believed in so-called “non-economic” factors of capitalism. He based his analysis on a number of interconnections he saw between capitalist development and the influences of various spheres of society such as religion, law and political institutions. I am going to give an overview of the two different explanations for the origin of capitalism by Marx and Weber. Further I am going to investigate who of the two was right or whether the two theories can be synthesised. [...]

New Departures In Marxian Theory written by Stephen Resnick and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-27 with Business & Economics categories.

Over the last twenty-five years, Stephen Resnick and Richard Wolff have developed a groundbreaking interpretation of Marxian theory generally and of Marxian economics in particular. This book brings together their key contributions and underscores their different interpretations. In facing and trying to resolve contradictions and lapses within Marxism, the authors have confronted the basic incompatibilities among the dominant modern versions of Marxian theory, and the fact that Marxism seemed cut off from the criticisms of determinist modes of thought offered by post-structuralism and post-modernism and even by some of Marxism’s greatest theorists.

Economy And Society Selected Writings written by Karl Polanyi and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-04 with Philosophy categories.

Few figures are more crucial to understanding the upheavals of our contemporary era than Karl Polanyi. In a world riven by social and economic crises, from rising inequality to the decay of democratic institutions and profound technological disruption, Polanyi’s path-breaking account of the dynamics of market capitalism and his defence of society and nature against the dangerous tendencies of the market capitalist system are more relevant than ever. This book brings together Polanyi’s most important articles and essays to give a unique selection of his essential shorter writings, mixing classic texts with significant but previously little-known pieces. It highlights the coherence and richness of Polanyi’s theoretical and political approach, making it indispensable for understanding his overarching intellectual contribution. The volume includes his interwar writings, which deal with the world economic crisis and the socialist alternative to conservative and fascist developments; his reflection on political theory and the international situation after the war; and his comparative studies of economic institutions. Polanyi’s political writings are complemented and supported by the critique of economic determinism and what he termed ‘our obsolete market mentality’. This book is an invaluable companion to Polanyi’s masterpiece, The Great Transformation, and an essential resource for students and scholars of political economy, sociology, history and political philosophy.
