Economic Integration In Africa written by Richard Elias Mshomba and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with BUSINESS & ECONOMICS categories.

"In this work Richard E. Mshomba offers an in-depth analysis of economic integration in Africa with a focus on the East African Community (EAC), arguably the most ambitious of all the regional economic blocs currently in existence in Africa. Economic Integration in Africa provides more than just an overview of regional economic blocs in Africa. It also offers a rich historical discussion on the birth and death of the first EAC, starting with the onset of colonialism in the 1890s, and a systematic analysis of the birth, growth, and aspirations of the current EAC. Those aspirations include forming a monetary union and eventually an East African political federation. This book also examines the African Union's aspirations for continent-wide integration as envisioned by the Abuja Treaty. Mshomba carefully argues that maturity of democracy and good governance in each country are prerequisites for the formation of a viable and sustainable East African federation and genuine continentwide integration."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

The Distribution Of Gains In A Common Market written by Benton F. Massell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1964 with Africa, East categories.

The East African common market -- composed of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika -- has existed since 1922. Now that the three countries have gained their independence, the governments are deliberating whether the common market should be maintained and, if so, under what arrangements. While there is general agreement that the common market benefits East Africa as a whole, there is some question concerning how the gains are distributed. Some observers have suggested that, although Kenya derives the lion's share of the gains, both Uganda and Tanganyika have gained as well. Others have argued that the gains to Kenya are at the expense of its two partners. In the present study this issue is examined and some suggestions concerning the future operation of the common market are made.

Flexible Regional Economic Integration In Africa written by Timothy Masiko and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Africa, East categories.

"This book examines the relationship between flexible regional economic integration in the East African Community (EAC), through its application of variable geometry, and the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a continent-wide form of integration. It uses a historical, political, legal and economic analysis of the processes that led to the adoption of flexible regional integration in Africa, with particular regard to the EAC. This takes place in the inescapable context of pan-Africanism, showing how regional integration efforts in Africa are based on pan-Africanist ideals, and how an evolution of these ideals has led to an evolution in the goals of integration. With growing awareness of the weaknesses and impracticality of consensus-based decision-making on a global level, it makes the case for the pursuit of flexibility in multilateral trade, drawing lessons from the experience of the AfCFTA and blocs in other regions. This book is a historical evaluation of regional economic integration efforts in Africa and it follows the path of attempts to integrate the economies on the continent from colonial times to the birth of the AfCFTA. While it is a study in law, it relies heavily on politics, economics and history to weave together a more complete theory of economic integration based on the African experience. Flexible Regional Economic Integration in Africa was awarded the 2020 SIEL-Hart Prize in International Economic Law."--

The East African Community written by Ms.Catherine McAuliffe and has been published by International Monetary Fund this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-14 with Business & Economics categories.

The East African Community (EAC) has been among the fastest growing regions in sub-Saharan Africa in the past decade or so. Nonetheless, the recent growth path will not be enough to achieve middle-income status and substantial poverty reduction by the end of the decade—the ambition of most countries in the region. This paper builds on methodologies established in the growth literature to identify a group of countries that achieved growth accelerations and sustained growth to use as benchmarks to evaluate the prospects, and potential constraints, for EAC countries to translate their recent growth upturn into sustained high growth. We find that EAC countries compare favorably to the group of sustained growth countries—macroeconomic and government stability, favorable business climate, and strong institutions—but important differences remain. EAC countries have a smaller share of exports, lower degree of financial deepening, lower levels of domestic savings, higher reliance on donor aid, and limited physical infrastructure and human capital. Policy choices to address some of these shortcomings could make a difference in whether the EAC follows the path of sustained growth or follows other countries where growth upturns later fizzled out.
