Currency War is an international thriller that only Lawrence B. Lindsey – economist, adviser to presidents, and Washington insider – could tell. Is it possible to wage war without weapons? Is it possible to win a war without firing a shot? These are the questions facing Ben Coleman after he finds himself a first-hand witness to a bank run in Beijing that ends up being brutally suppressed by the Chinese military. Coleman, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve under President Will Turner, realizes this is a harbinger of things to come… a suspicion confirmed by Li Xue, his counterpart in the Chinese government. Li is part of a modernizing movement that is locked in confrontation with a hardline faction headed by General Deng Wenxi. Deng sees the U.S. in a weak economic position and plans to make China the global superpower by replacing the U.S. dollar with the yuan as the world's reserve currency. So begins a currency war between the United States and China – a war fought in dollars and yuan against a landscape of shifting international alliances and political infighting on both sides. Coleman's marriage is even compromised when his wife – a beautiful, retired MI-6 agent from England – is drawn back into the game of spycraft and intelligence gathering. As the bloodless war rages, readers are taken on a roller coaster ride through the inner sanctums of power in the world – from the upstairs residence of the White House to the board room of the People's Bank of China; from a high society dinner party in London to the birth of a Political Action Committee at an exclusive Virginia resort; and from the bedrooms of the elite to the forbidden fleshpots of Laos.

'A splendid critique' James O'Brien, Times Literary Supplement 'Richly nuanced, the most stimulating book I have read on Labour in ages' Martin Kettle, Guardian 'A brilliant book ... a reading of left-wing politics that suggests a road ahead' Independent A 'dark knight' conflict between good and evil; control by elite puppet masters; nostalgia for a golden age: these are the core myths of populism. And these narratives, argues Chris Clarke, have seduced the Left in Britain, causing bitter division and electoral disaster. Only by breaking this narrative spell and moving towards pluralism can Labour hope to fix itself - and to one day hold power again. Greenspan Counsel written by Sidney Lewis Jones and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This economic policy history describes the policy views and counsel provided by Alan Greenspan when he served as the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during the Ford Administration. The author, Dr. Sidney L. Jones, who served as the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy, eloquently presents his experiences while working with Greenspan. In addition, Dr. Jones performed extensive research through a complete review of the files at the Gerald R. Ford Library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to produce a valuable historical record for scholars, policy makers, and students of contemporary American politics. The study begins with a review of Greenspan's philosophy and methodology. It describes the unexpected formation of the Ford Administration following the resignation of President Nixon. The anti-inflation package of economic policies proposed by the new officials was immediately overwhelmed by a collapse of economic activity caused by cyclical factors and unusual external stress. Greenspan created a unique "weekly GNP" to track the volatile conditions. He recognized that the sharp downturn was caused by the extreme liquidation of inventories rather than a failure of final demand. His policy recommendations focused on stable long-term recovery and reduction of the disruptive double-digit rate of inflation. The study then describes the business cycle recovery marked from March 1975. Greenspan's strong leadership helped to sustain monetary and fiscal policies and the deregulation of economic activities coupled with the avoidance of an increase in government planning and control of the domestic and global economic system. The last chapter summarizes the policy lessons that now support stable monetary and fiscal policies. Book jacket.

Financial Structure And Stability written by Alexander Karmann and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Business & Economics categories.

The basic question of this book is what we can learn from empirical as well as theoretical analysis of financial systems, differing cross-sectional and changing structually over time, with respect to the issue of stability of financial systems. Part I of the book deals with stability issues in a globalizing financial world and addresses topics of convergence, domestic policy, financial bubbles, crises and international coordination. Part II is on banking systems. Country specific adoption and restructuring of (universal but also separation) banking systems are key problems for the industrialized economies, while catching-up is of major concern for the economies in transition. Feeble regional economies and subsidized banking is at the heart of the vivid dispute on public sector banking being taken up in Part III. The last Part is devoted to resource-oriented approaches in quantifiying financial development and risk of sovereign default.

Dollarization written by Eduardo Levy Yeyati and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Business & Economics categories.

Theoretical and empirical analysis of de jure dollarization. With the persistent instability of international financial markets, emerging economies are exploring new ways to reduce exposure to capital flow volatility. Some analysts argue that financially open economies are best served by more flexible regimes, while others argue in favor of extreme exchange rate regimes that have a strong commitment to a fixed parity or dispense with an independent currency. The successful launch of the euro has made more realistic the prospect of replacing a national currency with a strong foreign one. Recent examples include the adoption of the US dollar by Ecuador and El Salvador. The introduction of a foreign currency as sole legal tender, termed full (de jure) dollarization, has been the center of much political and academic debate. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the issues from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The topics discussed include the role of balance sheet effects, the linkage between currency risk and country risk, the impact of dollarization on trade, financial integration and credibility, the implications of dollarization for the lender of last resort, and the institutional and political economy aspects of dollarization.
