This book analyses how financial elites in key dollar-holding emerging markets perceive the contest between the euro and the dollar for global currency status. It also assesses how far the Eurozone has gone in challenging US hegemony in monetary affairs through the prism of these elites. Drawing on Chartalist and Constructivist theories of money, the author provides a systematic approach to studying global currency dynamics and presents extensive original empirical data on financial elites in China, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Brazil. Some economies of the European periphery also suffered from similar domestic issues and plunged into recession due to economic crisis and austerity policies implemented in its wake. This book theorises and analyses the evolving nature of capitalism in emerging economies (the BRICs) and the European periphery in the face of pressures from globalisation and economic crises The volume seeks to make sense of these crises and their impact using the framework of comparative capitalism while testing its applicability beyond the advanced industrialised countries for which it was developed. The authors draw on late Uwe Becker’s open qualitative approach, systematically integrating the state into the analysis and paying close attention to the role of changing ideas, character of international integration, leadership and informality. Emerging market economies (EMEs) have become the darlings of international investors and the focus of enormous attention in academic, media, and policy circles. M. Ayhan Kose and Eswar Prasad present the definitive account of the evolution of EMEs and use the lens of the global financial crisis to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Led by a set of large and dynamic countries—including Brazil, China, India, and Russia—EMEs have become a dominant presence in the world economy. They now account for a substantial share of world output and have been a major driver of global growth during the past decade. However, the financial crisis of 2007–09 and the worldwide recession that followed cast a pall over the notion that EMEs had become self-reliant and "decoupled" from demand conditions in and financial flows from advanced countries.
