Software systems play an increasingly important role in modern societies. Smart cards for personal identi?cation, e-banking, software-controlled me- cal tools, airbags in cars, and autopilots for aircraft control are only some examples that illustrate how everyday life depends on the good behavior of software. Consequently, techniques and methods for the development of hi- quality, dependable software systems are a central research topic in computer science. A fundamental approach to this area is to use formal speci?cation and veri?cation. Speci?cation languages allow one to describe the crucial p- perties of software systems in an abstract, mathematically precise, and implementation-independent way. By formal veri?cation, one can then prove that an implementation really has the desired, speci?ed properties. Although this formal methods approach has been a research topic for more than 30 years, its practical success is still restricted to domains in which devel- ment costs are of minor importance. Two aspects are crucial to widen the application area of formal methods: – Formal speci?cation techniques have to be smoothly integrated into the software and program development process. – The techniques have to be applicable to reusable software components. This way, the quality gain can be exploited for more than one system, thereby justifying the higher development costs. Starting from these considerations, Peter Muller ̈ has developed new te- niques for the formal speci?cation and veri?cation of object-oriented so- ware. The speci?cation techniques are declarative and implementati- independent. They can be used for object-oriented design and programming.

Generative Programming And Component Engineering written by Frank Pfenning and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-11-19 with Computers categories.
This volume constitutes the proceedings of the second International Conference on Generative Programming and Component Engineering (GPCE 2003), held September 22–25, 2003, in Erfurt, Germany, sponsored by the NetObjectDays German industrial software development event, in cooperation with the ACM SIGPLAN and SIGSOFT societies. GPCE was created as an e?ort to bring - getherresearchersworkingonboththeprogramminglanguagesandthesoftware engineeringsideofprogramgenerationandcomponentengineering. Thecommon theme of program generation and component engineering is the domain-speci?c nature of both approaches. Depending on the characteristics of a domain, either a generative or a compositional technical solution may be appropriate. In just its second year, GPCE has shown a lot of promise for building a strong community. The response to the call for papers was excellent, with 62 submissions to the technical program, 2 of which were later withdrawn. Each paper received between three and ?ve reviews, many of them quite thorough and hopefully valuable to all authors. The electronic meeting allowed for - depthdiscussionsofallsubmissions, oftentoamuchgreaterextentthanpossible in a physical PC meeting. As a result, 21 papers were selected for presentation at the conference and are included in this volume, together with abstracts for the invited talks by Olivier Danvy and Peri Tarr. Of the accepted papers, 3 are co-authored by PC members (from a total of 5 PC submissions). We tried hard to ensure fairness and hold PC submissions to a high standard. The EDAS conference submission system was used to manage the paper submissions. Our EDAS installation was supported by Blair MacIntyre, who was particularlyhelpfulinresolvingtechnicalissueswiththesystem.

Five years on from its adoption in 1997 by the Object Management Group (OMG), the Uni?ed Modeling Language is the de facto standard for creating - agrammatic models of software systems. More than 100 books have been written about UML, and it is taught to students throughout the world. The de?nition of UML version 2 is well under way, and should be largely completed within the year. This will not only improve and enhance UML itself, including standard facilities for diagram interchange, but also make it fully integrated with other modeling technologies from the OMG, such as Meta-Object Facility (MOF) and XML Metadata Interchange (XMI). The Object Constraint Language, which has become an important vehicle for communicating detailed insights between UML researchers and practitioners, will have a much expanded speci?cation and be better integrated with the UML. The popularity of UML signi?es the possibility of a shift of immense prop- tions in the practice of software development, at least comparable to the shift from the use of assembly language to “third-generation” or “high-level” p- gramming languages. We dream of describing the behavior of software systems in terms of models, closely related to the needs of the enterprise being served, and being able to routinely translate these models automatically into executing p- grams on distributed computing systems. The OMG is promoting Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) as a signi?cant step towards this vision, and the MDA c- cept has received considerable support within the IT industry.

Computational Science is the scienti?c discipline that aims at the development and understanding of new computational methods and techniques to model and simulate complex systems. The area of application includes natural systems – such as biology, envir- mental and geo-sciences, physics, and chemistry – and synthetic systems such as electronics and ?nancial and economic systems. The discipline is a bridge b- ween ‘classical’ computer science – logic, complexity, architecture, algorithms – mathematics, and the use of computers in the aforementioned areas. The relevance for society stems from the numerous challenges that exist in the various science and engineering disciplines, which can be tackled by advances made in this ?eld. For instance new models and methods to study environmental issues like the quality of air, water, and soil, and weather and climate predictions through simulations, as well as the simulation-supported development of cars, airplanes, and medical and transport systems etc. Paraphrasing R. Kenway (R.D. Kenway, Contemporary Physics. 1994): ‘There is an important message to scientists, politicians, and industrialists: in the future science, the best industrial design and manufacture, the greatest medical progress, and the most accurate environmental monitoring and forecasting will be done by countries that most rapidly exploit the full potential ofcomputational science’. Nowadays we have access to high-end computer architectures and a large range of computing environments, mainly as a consequence of the enormous s- mulus from the various international programs on advanced computing, e.g.

Metalevel Architectures And Separation Of Crosscutting Concerns written by Akinori Yonezawa and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-06-30 with Computers categories.
This volume constitutes the proceedings of REFLECTION 2001, the Third Int- national Conference on Metalevel Architectures and Separation of Crosscutting Concerns, which was held in Kyoto, September 25-28, 2001. Metalevel architectures and re?ection have drawn the attention of researchers and practitioners throughout computer science. Re?ective and metalevel te- niques are being used to address real-world problems in such areas as: progr- ming languages, operating systems, databases, distributed computing, expert systems and web computing. Separation of concerns has been a guiding principle of software engineering for nearly 30 years, but its known bene?ts are seldom fully achieved in practice. This is primarily because traditional mechanisms are not powerful enough to handle many kinds of concerns that occur in practice. Over the last 10 years, to overcome the limitations of traditional frameworks, many researchers, including several from the re?ection community, have proposed new approaches. For the ?rst time, papers on advanced approaches to separation of concerns were explicitly solicited. Following the success of previous conferences such as IMSA’92 in Tokyo, Re?ection’96 in San Francisco, and Re?ection’99 in Saint Malo, we hope that the conference provided an excellent forum for researchers with a broad range of interests in metalevel architectures, re?ective techniques, and separation of concerns in general.
