This book provides a comprehensive understanding of environmental regionalism at the international level, analyzing the concept and identifying recurring patterns from six in-depth case studies. While ecoregions or environmental regions are defined on ecological boundaries rather than administrative criteria, ecoregionalism is the idea that regional dynamics should cluster around ecoregions, while ecoregionalization is the tendency of regional dynamics to cluster around ecoregions. Focusing on the international level, this book presents six cases of ecoregional processes from around the world and the regional environmental agreements: two are terrestrial, the Alps and the Andes; two are marine, the Mediterranean Sea and the Baltic Sea; two are related to freshwater ecosystems: the Amu Darya in Central Asia and the Great Lakes in North America. The book analyzes both ecoregional processes focused on the environment, as well as intersectoral ecoregional processes. The case studies are analyzed based on the ecoregional governance framework, developed by the author for this book. Despite the diversity of context, the similarity of the governance system of the six cases is striking. Several recurring patterns have been identified, which may also extend to the subnational level. They are not design principles, but may be taken into consideration for the design or redesign of current and future regional environmental agreements and processes. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental politics, natural resource management, spatial planning and international relations.

This original study applies the philosophical/theological thought of Thomas Aquinas to issues of environmental ethics, specifically in relation to the restoration and preservation of the plains of the Loess Hills in Iowa. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae to a particular environmental region, namely the Loess Hills of Iowa. The book begins by telling the ecological story of the Loess Hills and then proceeds to summarize the development of environmental ethics through the legacy of Henry David Thoreau, thereby revealing certain tensions that exist in contemporary environmental debates. Then, after considering the strengths and weaknesses of anthropocentric and ecocentric ethical systems, the author provides an exposition of Aquinas' understanding of the bonum naturalis, the bonum connaturalis, and the bonum supernaturalis, as these are found in the Summa Theologiae. flourishing only in ways that simultaneously save the contextualizing ecosystems. This ethic is then applied to the particular case of the Loess Hills, producing an eudaimonistic ecoregionalism.

Ecoregionalization systems used in resource management stratify terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems and attempt to simplify ecological complexity. They provide an ecologically based alternative to arbitrary administrative planning units and a logical basis for forest resource & protected area planning, assessing biodiversity, monitoring ecosystems, and stratifying sample areas for research. This report examines the regional-level units of the three ecoregionalization systems available for Ontario: Hills Site Regions (Hills, 1959); Terrestrial Ecoregions of Ontario (Wickware & Rubec, 1989); and Revised Terrestrial Ecoregions (Ecological Stratification Working Group, 1995). The objective is to quantify these systems using a multivariate set of geoclimatic variables and to determine the effectiveness of these systems in stratifying different ecological conditions in the province. The report provides descriptive statistics & principal components analysis of each regional unit, compares multivariate distances & geologic similarity among units, and examines gradients of geoclimatic variables across unit boundaries. Strengths & weaknesses of each system in delineating groups of variables (temperature, precipitation, geology, terrain) are discussed along with the implications for using existing systems & future ecoregionalization development.
