In the heart of the Mediterranean lies a ticking time bomb of climate catastrophe, with Italy poised on the frontline. In “Ecoshock”, Giuseppe Caporale navigates the complex web of environmental challenges threatening Italy’s very existence. From the melting glaciers to the sinking city of Venice, from renewable energy setbacks to the aftermath of devastating disasters like those on the Marmolada Glacier and the floods in the Marche region, Caporale paints a vivid picture of a nation teetering on the brink. With journalistic precision and a quest for understanding, Caporale explores the urgent causes and harrowing symptoms of our planet’s escalating emergency. Rising sea levels, intensified storms, and coastal flooding loom large, presenting profound threats to both human lives and fragile ecosystems. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres starkly reminds us, we face a pivotal choice: collective action or collective suicide. Through Ecoshock readers are called to confront the harsh realities of our climate crisis. This timely exploration serves as a rallying cry for renewed responsibility and heightened awareness. In the face of impending apocalypse, Caporale urges us to embrace a shared commitment to a sustainable future for the Mediterranean and the world.

Students in an introductory communication course were asked to participate in an experiment to create an index for ecoshock and determine the relationship of ecoshock to other constructs. Students were assigned to a face-to-face (FTF) and an online learning ecology in order to measure the presence of ecoshock in both environment. The ecoshock index was tested against the construct of affective learning to determine the relationship between ecoshock and students' internalized positive attitudes toward course content and subject matter. The results of the study showed evidence that the reported experience of ecoshock in the online learning ecology is significantly higher than the reported experience of ecoshock in a FTF learning ecology. Furthermore, students in the FTF learning environment reported higher affective learning than in an online learning environment. Importantly, the results of the study indicated a strong negative relationship between ecoshock and affective learning.

The Carbon Bubble written by Jeff Rubin and has been published by Random House Canada this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-12 with Business & Economics categories.

As the price of oil falls, bestselling author and economist Jeff Rubin takes us to the epicentre of the bursting global carbon bubble, and dares us to imagine a new engine for growth that does not run on oil. For a decade, the vision of Canada's future as an energy superpower has driven the country's political agenda, as well as the fast-paced development of Alberta's oil sands and the push for more pipelines like Keystone XL across the continent to bring that bitumen to market. Anyone who objects to pipelines and tanker-train traffic, north or south of the US border, is labeled a dreamer, or worse—an environmentalist: someone who puts the health of the planet ahead of the economic survival of their neighbours. In The Carbon Bubble, Jeff Rubin compellingly shows how an economic vision that rests on oil is dead wrong. Changes in energy markets in the US—where domestic production is booming while demand for oil is shrinking—are quickly turning the oil dream into an economic nightmare. Like U.S. coal stocks, the share values of oil-sands producers have been drastically reduced by falling fuel prices and are increasingly exposed to the world's efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Rubin argues that there is a lifeline to a better future. The very climate change that will leave much of the country's carbon unburnable could at the same time make some of Canada's other resource assets more valuable: its water and its land. In tomorrow's economy, he argues, Canada won't be an energy superpower, but it has the makings of one of the world's great breadbaskets, as everything from the corn belt to viniculture heads to higher latitudes. And in the global climate that the world's carbon emissions are inexorably creating, growing food will soon be a lot more valuable than mining bitumen.

Catastrophism written by Sasha Lilley and has been published by PM Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-05 with Political Science categories.

We live in catastrophic times. The world is reeling from the deepest economic crisis since the Great Depression, with the threat of further meltdowns ever-looming. Global warming and myriad dire ecological disasters worsen—with little if any action to halt them—their effects rippling across the planet in the shape of almost biblical floods, fires, droughts, and hurricanes. Governments warn that there is no alternative to the bitter medicine they prescribe—or risk devastating financial or social collapse. The right, whether religious or secular, views the present as catastrophic and wants to turn the clock back. The left fears for the worst, but hopes some good will emerge from the rubble. Visions of the apocalypse and predictions of impending doom abound. Across the political spectrum, a culture of fear reigns.? Catastrophism explores the politics of apocalypse—on the left and right, in the environmental movement—and examines why the lens of catastrophe can distort our understanding of the dynamics at the heart of these numerous disasters—and fatally impede our ability to transform the world. Lilley, McNally, Yuen, and Davis probe the reasons why catastrophic thinking is so prevalent, and challenge the belief that it is only out of the ashes that a better society may be born. The authors argue that those who care about social justice and the environment should jettison doomsaying—even as it relates to indisputably apocalyptic climate change. Far from calling people to arms, they suggest, catastrophic fear often results in passivity and paralysis—and, at worst, reactionary politics.?
