The 50 'ecumenical pilgrims' portrayed in this book illustrate the richness of the spiritual traditions which meet in the ecumenical movement. They are among 20th-century Christians whose faith, prayer, work and sacrifice have helped to break down the churches' long heritage of division. The testimony of their lives is thus a contemporary challenge to new commitments to unity and renewal. In these brief portraits the focus is not so much on biographical details as on the richness of the spiritual traditions which meet in the ecumenical movement and enrich the life of the churches together.

Walking together in faith and solidarity - What does it mean to go on pilgrimage? And further: what does it mean for Christians around the world to understand their discipleship in terms of pilgrimage in God's realm of justice and peace? This engaging and inspiring volume, developed by the Theological Study Group of the World Council of Church's Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace, takes stock of the spiritual, social, and theological meanings of this global ecumenical initiative and its relevance to different regional, confessional, and generational contexts. The thirteen contributions are enlivened by personal stories of the authors and perspectives of the traditions they represent, and the volume offers constructive ways in which Christians can renew their notion of what it means to be authentically church today. "Our journey of faith is personal yet never fully private. In fact, our relationship with God draws us ever closer to those around us, learning from and accountable to those in need and those who live at the margins. This volume shows us what it means to live as pilgrims journeying on toward justice, and what it means to see not just ourselves but also our faith communities and our whole life together in this way." - Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, from the Foreword Susan Durber is a minister of the United Reformed Church in the UK and Moderator of the WCC Commission on Faith and Order. The ecumenical prayer cycle is the annual prayer journey of Christians in solidarity with the people and churches of the whole world, focusing on different countries or regions each week. Available in print and online, the prayer cycle has become a spiritual guidepost of the ecumenical movement, as it enables Christians everywhere to identify and pray with their sisters and brothers around the globe. This edition largely retains the geographic sequence of earlier editions. It also retains the sequence of elements in each week: an introductory word about each region, intercessions of thanksgiving and petition specific to the context, and a compilation of prayers from the region. Enhanced by photos and song suggestions, it also adds some thematic sections or weeks as well, centring Christian prayer on some of the most pressing issues that confront global Christianity, from peace to environment to migration to gender relations. This edition also ties the annual circumnavigation in prayer to the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace, the ecumenical initiative that asks Christians everywhere to join in transformative work for all humanity. The ecumenical prayer cycle becomes itself a virtual pilgrimage, a spiritual encounter with the gifts and challenges of Christian churches around the world. Ester Pudjo Widiasih, from the Javanese Christian Churches in Indonesia, is programme executive for spiritual life, and also serves the Faith and Order Commission, in the World Council of Churches. Karen L. Bloomquist is has directed theological work of the ELCA (Chicago) and Lutheran World Federation (Geneva). Most recently, she served as Dean at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, and her latest book is Seeing-Remembering-Connecting: Subversive Practices of the Church (2016). How are we to assess the modern ecumenical movement? Is it 'an extraordinary gift to the Church' and 'an amazing movement of renewal: or is it a giant missed opportunity? Pilgrims of Hope is an account of the ecumenical endeavour of the churches in Australia over three decades. Following Frank Engel's monumental Christians in Australia: Conflict and Unity and Christians in Australia: Times of Change that recorded the evolution of ecumenism and the ecumenical involvement of the churches in Australian society up until the late 1970s, Pilgrims of Hope picks up that story, and does so from a particular perspective. It tells of the development of ecumenism in Australia as it has been expressed through the various national and state councils of churches during the subsequent thirty years. Furthermore, it reflects the perspective of an 'insider': it is written from the experience of one who was intimately involved with those councils for more than two of those three decades. The book brings the ecumenical narrative up to 2010, the centenary year of the modern ecumenical movement, and so asks and responds to the question: how did Australian churches come through the last three decades of that ecumenical century? Many insights are offered into how that question can be answered, recognising the difficulties, acknowledging the disappointments and celebrating the progress on the journey. Most importantly, Pilgrims of Hope relates the ecumenical story out of a strong conviction that ecumenism holds up to the churches an all-embracing vision for unity and renewal in the whole Church and in the whole human community. The book shows the extent to which the churches caught that vision and how they responded to it: * by being together in fellowship to deepen their understanding of each other; * to grow more fully into the truth of Christ; * to create more extensive cooperation together and to signify their unity in Christ more visibly; and *by working together in witness to the broader community and in striving for the building of a more compassionate, just and peaceful world. This book offers a glimpse of the breadth of that ecumenical endeavour as it has been lived by Australian churches over thirty years. The Reverend Dr Ray Williamson is an Anglican priest, a graduate of Sydney and Newcastle universities, and has been a theological teacher throughout his ordained ministry. He served as the General Secretary of the NSW Ecumenical Council for twenty-one years, during which time he also acted as the secretary to two national ecumenical commissions. In 1997, he was a co-founder of and continues to work with the Centre for Ecumenical Studies. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2008 for his ecumenical work. Ray is married to Erica Mathieson, and has two daughters and two grandsons.

Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, has been the most visible member of the Catholic clergy in the world second only to Pope John Paul II. His status as the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith made him one of the most discussed churchmen in recent history. On the occasion of Ratzingers's seventy-fifth birthday, his former students selected essays, lectures, letters, and conferences that Ratzinger has written in recent years- writing that they feel best represents his position on issues of theology, the modern world, secularism, non-Christian religious, and other key topics of the Catholic Church. This book, characterized by Ratzinger's concisely reasoned style, is an invaluable resource to those who wish to understand the modern Church and the thinking of Pope Benedict XVI, as well as a treasured volume for those who are students of Ratzinger's theology.
