My father left Austria in 1956 determined to get as far away from Europe as possible, which happened to be New Zealand. Unlike most of the other Austrians who soon moved on to Australia, he stayed and married a local girl. Wanting his children to assimilate he refrained from speaking German, but still dressed us in traditional clothes. I was born only 15 years after the end of WW2 when memories were still raw, very raw, and seeing a little boy running around in lederhosen and making gun noises must have alarmed the good people of Dunedin, many of whom would have relatively recently been fighting my relatives. Eventually, I visited my Austrian family and saw something of Austria, and started to take an interest in its history, as I was aware that what was taught in schools and contained in history books written by academics from Oxford and Cambridge was very different to the history that Austrians knew. These books did not do Austria justice at all, and I felt that the country had a story that had not been told in the English-speaking world but needed to be. So, I decided to write my own history, largely bypassing academic literature and going back to the original historic documents, many of which are now available online as digital images. It seemed to me that the accounts of people who were alive to witness and record events were much more important and trustworthy than what a professor thought 200 years later. This meant I had to learn to read and translate old German script, which is not my first language, and is why it took me several years to write this book. I wanted to avoid the usual historians trap of simply reciting dates of battles and lists of Emperors and to try to discover some of the reason behind events. With regard to WW2, which is still a very touchy subject 80 years later, I have tried to be as open and honest about Austria's role as possible. I have also included the odd snippet about my family's involvement where this seemed appropriate. Due to recent events in Ukraine with some complications for Austria I have updated this book to a third edition. One of my occupations is geologist and so I couldn't help writing something about Austria's geological history. This book describes the story of modern Austria from prehistory to the present, with a brief foray into the Age of the Dinosaurs. It draws on a wide variety of sources, and is intended to tell history in an interesting way, rather than a recital of events and dates. It begins in the Jurassic and explains how the sometimes catastrophic events of the past created the modern Austrian landscape, which has had a big influence on the movement of peoples and historical events. The book then covers prehistoric settlement, the development of the first towns and cities, and eventually the emergence of Austria as a nation cobbled together from small robber baron fiefdoms by two dynastic families, the Babenbergs and later the Habsburgs, the latter going on to acquire a vast empire that at its height created a super-power that spanned Europe. Austria and its glittering capital Vienna came to form the cultural center of Europe as the country looked to the west and east, symbolized by its double headed eagle. But all this was lost after Austria blundered into war following the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. The bitter defeat of WWI stripped the country of both its empire and its ruling dynasty, and left it as the poverty stricken First Republic, a rump state reduced to its original frontiers and with one of its eagle heads lopped off. The Great Depression stymied economic recovery, and Nazism grew and spread to defeat Austro-Fascism. In 1939 Austria was invaded by Nazi Germany and lost its identity altogether for the duration of WWII. The country at first regained its identity but not its liberty, being occupied, sometime brutally, by Western and Soviet forces. For a while it looked as though much of the country might disappear behind the Iron Curtain, but in 1955 it won its freedom as the Second Republic. After 1955 an almost permanent coalition between socialists and moderate conservatives created a moribund political landscape but delivered prosperity. Politics became more uncertain after the rise of right wing parties began in the 1990's, and Austria continues to face challenges over its national identity, immigration, and lingering controversy in the West over the Nazi past of many Austrians.

One day when I was about 15 as I sat in my high school history class someone asked the teacher what the difference was between an Austrian and a German. “Nothing!” he snapped, “Austrians are just Germans. It’s the same thing.” I was aghast. I felt my whole world shift. How could anyone think an Austrian was a German? They were completely different, everyone knew that. Years later, after I had spent some time in Austria and got to know my family, I began to read academic books written in English about Austrian history and was astonished at how completely at variance they were with my own family’s experiences. All the books were written from an American or English academic perspective, many with a faint but perceptible undercurrent of hostility. I felt a lot of it to be factually wrong and misleading, and in some cases found the proof that that was so. I decided I had to tell Austria’s story as I saw it so I went back to original sources and started from scratch. And here it is.

1938, Salzburg. A powerful story of hope, forbidden love, and incredible courage, about three sisters who will risk everything-even their own lives-as part of the resistance movement in Nazi-occupied Austria. Johanna, Birgit and Lotte Eder have always lived quiet lives, working in their father's clockmaking shop and helping their mother in the house. But like many other Austrians, they find it impossible to ignore the changes in the world around them. At first Johanna finds it hard to believe the Nazis pose a real threat. But then her father hires Franz to help in his shop. He's kind and soulful, with dark eyes that twinkle with intelligence. But he's Jewish, and as Johanna falls for him, she realizes that loving him puts them all in danger. Then comes the Anschluss-the reunification of Austria and Germany under Nazi rule. The three sisters' lives have become ever more separate with Lotte joining the convent at Nonnberg Abbey and Birgit's secret involvement with the Resistance. But as Johanna realizes how mistaken she was about the level of danger, she begins to see that it may be down to her to protect the man she loves. She knows that she can't do it alone though. She will have to turn to the people she trusts the most: her sisters. The three of them work together to try to get Franz to the safety of Switzerland, and they soon prove invaluable to the Resistance. But they're risking everything. Can three women who would die for each other, also be prepared to die for what is right? The sisters' subsequent journey from Nazi-occupied Salzburg to the devastating concentration camps of Ravensbruck and Mauthausen will show the strength of human spirit like never before. As, out of the darkness, a tiny seed of hope flowers... A totally heartbreaking and impossibly powerful story about love, tragedy, and the power of humanity. Perfect for fans of The Nightingale, The Lilac Girls and The Sound of Music. Readers are loving The Edelweiss Sisters: "A heart-breaking, tear-jerking and emotional book... I was so hooked into the story that I felt I was living with these sisters during that time!! The ending was so sad, heart-breaking that I felt like I wanted to cry... Will keep you up all night." Tropical Girl Reads Books, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Soooo hauntingly raw & captivating, it was so hard to put it down. Reading this, I felt instantly transported... This is one novel I would 100% recommend putting on your TBR list this summer. You find instant connection with at least one of the sisters, if not all of them. It will completely move you & pull at your heart strings." Kate J Renee Book Reviews ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "What a wonderfully written book... Sobbed my eyes out... it should have come with a hankie-needed warning. Felt so much for each of the characters it was like they were also my family and friends. Highly recommended and worth more than a five-star rating." NetGalley reviewer ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Holocaust movies have become an important segment of world cinema and the de-facto Holocaust education for many. One quarter of all American-produced Holocaust-related feature films have won or been nominated for at least one Oscar. In fact, from 1945 through 1991, half of all American Holocaust features were nominated. Yet most Holocaust movies have fallen through the cracks and few have been commercially successful. This book explores these trends--and many others--with a comprehensive guide to hundreds of films and made-for-television movies. From Anne Frank to Schindler's List to Jojo Rabbit, more than 400 films are examined from a range of perspectives--historical, chronological, thematic, sociological, geographical and individual. The filmmakers are contextualized, including Charlie Chaplin, Sidney Lumet, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino and Roman Polanski. Recommendations and reviews of the 50 best Holocaust films are included, along with an educational guide, a detailed listing of all films covered and a four-part index-glossary.

Marietta von Burgheim is a woman of beauty and morality, and an heiress to a fortune. Turning her back on the responsibilities of her noble birth and her father's wrath, Marietta joins a student resistance group determined to overthrow the Nazis. Bill Roth, Reuters' correspondent based in pre-war Berlin, is the maverick heir to his uncle, an American industrialist. When Bill and Marietta meet they fall headlong in love, but their passion is overshadowed by the horror of the Nazi occupation and the outbreak of war. Hugo von Hesse, Marietta's step-brother, makes a meteoric rise through the ranks to become a powerful SS officer. Reaching the pinnacle of power in the New Order, Hugo uses his position to destroy the von Burgheims and take over the family fortune. As the Nazis tighten their grip on Europe, the struggle between Marietta, Bill and Hugo becomes a microcosm of the war itself - violent, bloody and treacherous.
