The masterpiece of Steinbeck’s later years, East of Eden is a sprawling epic in which his most mesmerizing characters and enduring themes were created and explored: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love’s absence. Set in the rich farmland of California’s Salinas Valley, this expansive and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. East of Eden was a 1955 film introducing James Dean, the book that revived Oprah’s Book Club, considered by Steinbeck to be his magnum opus, and has remained vitally present in American culture for over half a century. “This Eden is a delight, a rollicking ride that never lets up, with a surprising — and emotionally rich — ending.” — Quill & Quire (Starred Review) Michael Atarian is out of his depth. The closest he ever came to working in tech was when he rode a delivery bike for a food app in Vancouver. Yet when his coder girlfriend dies, he is inexplicably headhunted by a sinister tech mogul and transplanted to Silicon Valley. There, a reluctant spy named Aoife lures him into the hands of an enigmatic war-gamer who tricks them both into joining his quest to save the world. Hunted by government agents and corporate goons, and manipulated at every turn, Aoife and Michael find themselves in an intercontinental chase that takes them from California to New York, from the forests of Uganda to Jerusalem, Gaza, Alexandria, and Paris, and to a final showdown with the truth in Dublin. Propulsive and richly entertaining, This Eden updates the classic spy novel for a world under mortal threat from cyber-warfare, feral money, runaway technology, and a cynical onslaught on truth itself.

Discover the thrilling and evocative #1 New York Times bestselling Eden trilogy as never before with this beautifully designed collection from the visionary author and digital creator Joey Graceffa. In Children of Eden, meet Rowan—a second child in a future world where population control makes her an outlaw. She can never go to school, make friends, or get the eye implants that will mark her as a true member of Eden. Hidden by her family for sixteen years, she recklessly escapes for what she swears will be only one night of adventure. Though she finds an exotic world, and even a friend, the night leads to tragedy and forces Rowan to become a renegade on the run. In Elites of Eden, she discovers there is more to her destiny than merely running and hiding. Her fate is mysteriously tied to Yarrow—an elite: rich, regal, and intended for greatness. Rowan’s life is one wild party after another in Eden…until she meets a fascinating, lilac-haired girl named Lark. When these two girls discover the thread that binds them together, the collision of memories means that their lives may change drastically—and that Eden may never be the same. In the unforgettable finale Rebels of Eden, Rowan is finally in Harmonia—a sustainable commune in the wilderness she always thought was dead. She may be safe, but she’s determined to rescue the loved ones she left behind. Though her friends are in terrible danger, her pleas for help are ignored until a shocking reminder of her past pushes her to infiltrate Eden. What she discovers is even worse than the situation she left behind. In the chaos of civil war, Rowan and her friends join forces with the second children and other rebels trapped inside. They fight for their lives, and for the fate of humanity in this broken Earth.

Through the last half of the nineteenth century, numbers of Canadians began to regard the West as a land of ideal opportuniy for large-scale agricultural settlement. This belief, in turn, led Canada to insist on ownership of the region and on immediate development. Underlying the expansionist movement was the assumption that the West was to be a hinterland to central Canada, both in its economic relationship and in its cultural development. But settlers who accepted the extravagant promises of expanionism found it increasingly difficult to reconcile the assumption of easstern dominance with their own perception of the needs of the West and of Canada. Doug Owram analyses the various phases of this development, examining in particular the writings - historical, scientific, journalistic, and promotional - that illuminate one of the most significant movements in the history of nineteenth-century Canada.

The biblical story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is a cornerstone of Western civilization, yet there are still many mysteries concerning its origins and meaning. In The Mythology of Eden, Arthur and Elena George utilize new historical and archaeological discoveries to reveal how the story’s author uses veiled symbolism and mythological storytelling to convey his message about the most profound questions of human existence regarding the divine, life, death, and immortality. This innovative book offers an interdisciplinary interpretation of the Eden story that delves into incorrect assumptions and brings to light details that have previously gone unnoticed. The Mythology of Eden provides a new understanding of the story of Adam and Eve and illuminates the story’s role and meaning in our modern world.

EDEN is two stories: one fictional, one fact. The fiction: Calif De'Alsace, a man devoted to the dissemination of life across the galaxy, has taken a group of one hundred artists and scientists to a sterile world named Eden for the purpose of bioengineering living works of art. Calif, an Ankh idealist, has decreed that no weapons be brought and that the group create a "paradise of peace where beauty...not the law of tooth and claw...reigns." Unknown to the Eden group, Calif was forced by a powerful man to include an artist, Iamoendi, who has secretly been using drugs to enhance his imaging abilities. Iamoendi, who is descended from Fundamentalist factions that fought in the Religionist Wars, slowly goes insane. Believing himself an instrument of god, Iamoendi turns against Project Eden. He obtains the genome libraries (programmed instructions for bioengineering plants and animals) for insects and arachnids. Subsequently, he creates an army of huge insect warriors, and launches a secret attack against Project Eden. Thirteen survive Iamoendi's attack. Weaponless, they are forced to create living weapons in defense. With the battle lines drawn, the war begins. The survivors create a surprise defense of giganticized ant lions, trapdoor spiders, and carnivorous plants. They defeat Iamoendi's army, but Iamoendi escapes. Two more battles ensue in which Iamoendi's attacking monstrosities become increasingly bizarre and surreal. More and more survivors die with each battle leading to an ending both poignant and transcendent. The fact: In the spirit of Coleridge and Poe who used an opiate to enhance their poetic imagery, in the spirit of Huxley whose use of peyote awakened his awareness to the creative use of mind-altering substances, I have set down my own experiences with altered states as they relate to my creation of EDEN. My intent is to share my insights into the creative process as well as the source and derivation of both the philosophy underlying EDEN and the hallucinatory visions used in the telling of this story. It is a first person account of how, after being accidentally introduced to a hallucinogen, my subsequent use and experimentation became the stuff and substance of my novel EDEN.
