Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, RWTH Aachen University, language: English, abstract: "Themes of ruin and apocalypse intensify in several poems of the 1840's" and as one of the today most approved writers of that time, Edgar Allan Poe's poetry is certainly worth being investigated in this regard. In this paper I want to investigate the apocalyptic vision in Edgar Allan Poe's poems "The Conqueror Worm", published in 1843, and "The City in the Sea", in its final version from the year 1845. I also have to mention that I will examine "The Conqueror Worm" as a poem on its own and not in connection with the tale Ligeia, into which the poem was later (1845) established. I have also decided to work with the five-stanza version of "The City in the Sea", opposed to a widely spread opinion that the poem should only contain four stanzas . For an analysis concerned with this topic, it has to be made clear what I understand when I use the term apocalyptic. Therefore the paper starts with an attempt to define the term as good as possible. Afterwards I am going to give a thorough analysis of "The Conqueror Worm" first, and then I will analyze "The City in the Sea". The analyses are going to include interpretations according to the apocalyptic vision in the poems. At the end of the paper I will give a short summary together with the most important outcomes of the analyses.

Edgar Allan Poe written by David Halliburton and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

By attempting to suspend moral, ideological, or psychological assumptions, a phenomenological interpretation of literature hopes to reach "the things themselves," the essential phenomena of being, space, and time, as they are constituted, by consciousness, in words. Although there has been a tradition of phenomenological criticism in Europe for the last twenty years, David Halliburton is the first to write a general study of an American author from this particular point of view. The book begins with a methodological chapter that sets out the assumptions and procedures of the approach. This is followed by analyses of Poe's major works, exploring such special problems as Poe's treatment of the material world, including technology; the interrelation of body and consciousness; poetic voice; attitudes toward women; and the will to affirmation, plenitude, and unity. The center of interest is neither Poe's biography nor environment but always the meaning of Poe's words. Because these works are shaped by a single imagination and because they are experienced in time, as a process, each work has its own "way of going." The aim of the interpretation is to find this way and go along with it; to live each work dynamically, as it "happens," while tracing its interaction with other works. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

The Library of America presents “the first truly dependable collection of Poe’s poetry and tales”—featuring well-known works like ‘The Raven’ and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’, plus a selection of rarely published writings (New York Review of Books). Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry is famous both for the musicality of “To Helen” and “The City in the Sea” and for the hypnotic, incantatory rhythms of “The Raven” and “Ulalume.” “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Cask of Amontillado” show his mastery of Gothic horror; “The Pit and the Pendulum” is a classic of terror and suspense. Poe invented the modern detective story in “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” and developed the form of science fiction that was to influence, among others, Jules Verne and Thomas Pynchon. Poe was also adept at the humorous sketch of playful jeu d'esprit, such as “X-ing a Paragraph” or “Never Bet the Devil Your Head.” All his stories reveal his high regard for technical proficiency and for what he called “rationation.” Poe’s fugitive early poems, stories rarely collected (such as “Bon-Bon,” “King Pest,” “Mystification,” and “The Duc De L'Omelette”), his only attempt at drama, “Politian”—these and much more are included in this comprehensive collection, presented chronologically to show Poe’s development toward Eureka: A Prose Poem, his culminating vision of an indeterminate universe, printed here for the first time as Poe revised it and intended it should stand. A special feature of this volume is the care taken to select an authoritative text of each work. The printing and publishing history of every item has been investigated in order to choose a version that incorporates all of Poe’s own revisions without reproducing the errors or changes introduced by later editors. Here, then, is one of America’s and the world's most disturbing, powerful, and inventive writers. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Literature - Modern Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Göttingen (Philosophische Fakultät), course: Beyond Principle and Philosophy: Edgar Allan Poe as an American Author, language: English, abstract: In this paper, it will be argued that this emphasis on visual sensations is directly related to the violence against women as it exposes the murderers' motives and drives, their course of action as well as their attempt to then distort the reader's view of the truth in order to cover their involvement. For the discussion of this thesis Poe's short stories "The Oval Portrait," "Morella", "Berenice" and especially "Ligeia" will be considered. Many of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories deal with a fixation on dying women as he famously states in "The Philosophy of Composition: "death, then, of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world" (1621). The death of those women is often violent as they are murdered by a male character as a result of an "emotional estrangement between the male protagonist and a fated female" (Kennedy 118). Interestingly, the characters and the circumstances surrounding those deaths are described with an emphasis on the "lexical field of sight" (Marín-Ruiz 58) so that already "a cursory exposure to Poe's fiction leaves a strong impression of his recurrent emphasis on the eye" (Scheick 80). Detailed accounts of eyes, glances, gazes and vision keep reappearing in the selected stories, so that sight becomes one of the key elements of the tales.
