This is an open access book. It offers comprehensive, self-contained knowledge on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), which is a very promising technology for achieving intelligence in the next-generation wireless communications and computing networks. The book starts with the basic concepts, key techniques and network architectures of MEC. Then, we present the wide applications of MEC, including edge caching, 6G networks, Internet of Vehicles, and UAVs. In the last part, we present new opportunities when MEC meets blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, and distributed machine learning (e.g., federated learning). We also identify the emerging applications of MEC in pandemic, industrial Internet of Things and disaster management. The book allows an easy cross-reference owing to the broad coverage on both the principle and applications of MEC. The book is written for people interested in communications and computer networks at all levels. The primary audience includes senior undergraduates, postgraduates, educators, scientists, researchers, developers, engineers, innovators and research strategists.

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) provides cloud-like subscription-oriented services at the edge of mobile network. For low latency and high bandwidth services, edge computing assisted IoT (Internet of Things) has become the pillar for the development of smart environments and their applications such as smart home, smart health, smart traffic management, smart agriculture, and smart city. This book covers the fundamental concept of the MEC and its real-time applications. The book content is organized into three parts: Part A covers the architecture and working model of MEC, Part B focuses on the systems, platforms, services and issues of MEC, and Part C emphases on various applications of MEC. This book is targeted for graduate students, researchers, developers, and service providers interested in learning about the state-of-the-art in MEC technologies, innovative applications, and future research directions.

The oncoming data explosion of the Internet of Things, and in particular the Internet of Vehicles, has led to placing computation near the data, as opposed to backhauling large amounts of data to the Internet cloud. This type of edge networking provides efficiency gains; however, mobile edge networking must also be resilient in disruptive networks as well as provide security and privacy protection. In this thesis, we address both challenges, namely support efficient and robust communications at the network edge, even in disruptive connectivity conditions; and in the same conditions, maintain decentralized, private, confidential exchanges. First, we introduce the concept of Information Centric Networks (ICNs), an increasingly popular strategy for wireless edge scenarios and describe how caching and Network Coding can improve performance in disruptive wireless connectivity environments. Secondly, we introduce a privacy mechanism for mobile data that improves the privacy strength while preserving utility. That is, we perform query expansion to reduce the information leakage due to an individual's participation.

The Internet of Edges is a new paradigm whose objective is to keep data and processing close to the user. This book presents three different levels of Edge networking: MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing), Fog and Far Edge (sometimes called Mist or Skin). It also reviews participatory networks, in which user equipment provides the resources for the Edge network. Edge networks can be disconnected from the core Internet, and the interconnection of autonomous edge networks can then form the Internet of Edges. This book analyzes the characteristics of Edge networks in detail, showing their capacity to replace the imposing Clouds of core networks due to their superior server response time, data security and energy saving.

This book provides a comprehensive review and in-depth discussion of the state-of-the-art research literature and propose energy-efficient computation offloading and resources management for mobile edge computing (MEC), covering task offloading, channel allocation, frequency scaling and resource scheduling. Since the task arrival process and channel conditions are stochastic and dynamic, the authors first propose an energy efficient dynamic computing offloading scheme to minimize energy consumption and guarantee end devices’ delay performance. To further improve energy efficiency combined with tail energy, the authors present a computation offloading and frequency scaling scheme to jointly deal with the stochastic task allocation and CPU-cycle frequency scaling for minimal energy consumption while guaranteeing the system stability. They also investigate delay-aware and energy-efficient computation offloading in a dynamic MEC system with multiple edge servers, and introduce an end-to-end deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach to select the best edge server for offloading and allocate the optimal computational resource such that the expected long-term utility is maximized. Finally, the authors study the multi-task computation offloading in multi-access MEC via non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and accounting for the time-varying channel conditions. An online algorithm based on DRL is proposed to efficiently learn the near-optimal offloading solutions. Researchers working in mobile edge computing, task offloading and resource management, as well as advanced level students in electrical and computer engineering, telecommunications, computer science or other related disciplines will find this book useful as a reference. Professionals working within these related fields will also benefit from this book.

With the rapid development of big data, it is necessary to transfer the massive data generated by end devices to the cloud under the traditional cloud computing model. However, the delays caused by massive data transmission no longer meet the requirements of various real-time mobile services. Therefore, the emergence of edge computing has been recently developed as a new computing paradigm that can collect and process data at the edge of the network, which brings significant convenience to solving problems such as delay, bandwidth, and off-loading in the traditional cloud computing paradigm. By extending the functions of the cloud to the edge of the network, edge computing provides effective data access control, computation, processing and storage for end devices. Furthermore, edge computing optimizes the seamless connection from the cloud to devices, which is considered the foundation for realizing the interconnection of everything. However, due to the open features of edge computing, such as content awareness, real-time computing and parallel processing, the existing problems of privacy in the edge computing environment have become more prominent. The access to multiple categories and large numbers of devices in edge computing also creates new privacy issues. In this book, we discuss on the research background and current research process of privacy protection in edge computing. In the first chapter, the state-of-the-art research of edge computing are reviewed. The second chapter discusses the data privacy issue and attack models in edge computing. Three categories of privacy preserving schemes will be further introduced in the following chapters. Chapter three introduces the context-aware privacy preserving scheme. Chapter four further introduces a location-aware differential privacy preserving scheme. Chapter five presents a new blockchain based decentralized privacy preserving in edge computing. Chapter six summarize this monograph and propose future research directions. In summary, this book introduces the following techniques in edge computing: 1) describe an MDP-based privacy-preserving model to solve context-aware data privacy in the hierarchical edge computing paradigm; 2) describe a SDN based clustering methods to solve the location-aware privacy problems in edge computing; 3) describe a novel blockchain based decentralized privacy-preserving scheme in edge computing. These techniques enable the rapid development of privacy-preserving in edge computing.
