Kate and Luke who run a roadhouse in remote Central Australia are finding it hard to attract staff when a stranger turns up. Knowing little more than his name, and the fact that he is physically strong, they employ Thomas as a casual worker to help with cleaning, gardening and serving in the store. While Thomas does the work well, Kate finds him enigmatic. He is good with numbers, but poor with spelling. His knowledge is limited but he learns quickly. He seems nave but asks deep questions. On the other side of the world, in Saint Petersburg, Russian ex-cosmonaut and university lecturer Viktor Kamensky is challenged by Toby, one of his overseas students to break out of the reclusive life he had been living since the death of his wife and unborn child eight years earlier. With Tobys encouragement, he attends a reunion in Prague and agrees to speak at a summer conference in Hobart, Tasmania. Meanwhile, Kates daughter Ruth comes home on university vacation, meets Thomas and develops a friendship with him. She encourages him to spread his wings and share his ideas more widely. Thomas scans the Internet for conferences and finds an early photograph of Viktor Kamensky whose appearance is almost identical with his own. This catches him off guard and he tells Ruth that he is a clone of Viktor, grown on another planet, and on a mission to Earth. Ruth is distressed. Has she fallen in love with a man who is mentally ill? She devises a plan to prove to Thomas that his similarity to Viktor Kamensky is coincidental, and that he must learn to overcome his delusional tendencies. Ruth travels with Thomas to Hobart. They meet Viktor Kamensky and a critical set of challenges emerge, challenges that have the potential to change the way humans live their life on planet Earth.

John Kretschmer is sailing's practical philosopher – as much a doer as a thinker. And that is the overarching theme of this chronicle of a sailing life. Often amusing, sometimes poignant, occasionally terrifying but always inspiring, his deeply personal account is a welcome reminder of the good life waiting at sea. With hundreds of thousands of nautical miles under his keel, John's adventures have taken him several times around the world, with challenging crossings of the Atlantic and the Pacific, a narrow escape from a coup in Yemen, an unlikely deliverance from a coral reef off Belize as well as more serene, introspective passages where trade winds are blowing and stories are flowing. His crew has included CEOs, actors, writers, teachers, kids – in essence, everyone. John's narrative is interwoven with practical tips and advice in seamanship, but also, and just as importantly, his hard-won insights about making the most of our lives. He truly believes we find out who we really are, and what we are capable of, far from the shackles of land, when we find a place where time changes shape – days may merge into one another, but minutes are memorable. To live adventurously is to live more fully, and that is the life John Kretschmer continues to live. In this book he shares his simple profundities that will inspire those who live to sail, and those seeking something more rewarding from life.

This book describes my familys life, which is full of historical experiences going through the Hitler era, the Stalin regime, and communism, to the current decade in the United States. The accounts of our experiences reflect the time from the 1940s, when my mothers family had no electricity or water in their home in a village in Poland, to my successful career as an award winning chef and comfortable married life in the United States. Brush with the Edge of Time and Profession is a deeply personal book that details the joys and sorrows of a mother and son. Their stories are equally inspiring and celebrate the human heart and demonstrates how one can survive even in the most difficult of circumstances. These lifelong memories are about wonder and about kindness, they are about being open to the gifts of both the light and the shadows of our experience." - The US Review of Books

'One of those rare novels that leave us different people at the end than we were at the beginning.' GLORIA STEINEM 'She is a serious writer who deserves the sort of considered attention which, too often, she does not get...' MARGARET ATWOOD _______________________________________ Often compared to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and Naomi Alderman's The Power - Woman on the Edge of Time has been hailed as a classic of speculative science fiction. Disturbing and forward thinking, Marge Piercy's remarkable novel will speak to a new generation of readers. Connie Ramos has been unjustly incarcerated in a mental institution with no hope of release. The authorities view her as a danger to herself and to others. Her family has given up on her. But Connie has a secret - a way to escape the confines of her cell. She can see the future. . . For fans of THE HANDMAID'S TALE and THE POWER, this is a reissue of a much loved feminist classic.

Robert Jarman lived in Hempstead County, in what was known as the “wilds of Arkansas.” Hearing of the war coming to Arkansas, Robert and his three friends soon joined the 4th Arkansas Infantry, Confederate States of America, having to leave their families and sweethearts behind. The war took the four friends through the battles of Elkhorn Tavern (Pea Ridge) in Arkansas; Farmington, Mississippi; Richmond, Kentucky; and Murfreesboro, Tennessee (Stones River), all in 1862. Having volunteered to defend their homes in Arkansas, they ended up fighting their first four battles in four different states. Standing on the Edge of Time brings out the many hardships and the suffering the soldiers endured on the campaigns and long marches sometimes through the worst weather conditions. Hundreds of historical facts are included, giving a unique view of the Civil War as rarely seen.

A family on the last starship finds that stories themselves may very well save a dying world. In one of those stories, a man dies of radio while another finds a new lease on life in an ancient dingus. A phone that can be used to call a few minutes into the future leads to unexpected turmoil. An anthroid on trial for a murder may be the victim of a faulty linguistic circuit. A retired astronaut who cannot get his footing, the last librarian on earth, tales of a future ghetto where surprise is still a possibility, and a mathematician whose brilliant insight continually slips his mind. These are few of the themes to be found in this collection of mystery science fiction tales in the speculative tradition of the satires of Kurt Vonnegut and the ironies of Jorge Luis Borges from the author of A Small Box of Chaos and the award-winning An Interlude in Dreamland.
