Edith Stein is still the least known of German-Jewish women in whose life the history of the 20th century can be epitomized. Edith was brought up in a north German Jewish household that was gradually losing its ancient faith as it became assimilated into its Christian surroundings. Under Edmund Husserl at the University of Goettingen she explored the philosophy of phenomenology as a substitute for her lost Jewish faith, and eventually she became a convert to Christianity, taking the vows of one of its strictest orders, the Carmelite nuns. There she worked to reconcile her Christian faith with her continuing belief in phenomenology.

Edith Stein is widely known as a historical figure, a victim of the Holocaust and a saint, but still unrecognised as a philosopher. It was philosophy, however, that constituted the core of her life. Today her complete writings are available to scholars and therefore her thinking can be properly investigated and evaluated. Who is a human person? And what is his or her dignity according to Edith Stein? Those are the two leading questions investigated in this volume. The answer is presented based on the complete writings of the 20th-c. phenomenologist and, moreover, compared to the traditional Christian understanding of human dignity present in the writings of the Church Fathers and the Doctors of the Church as well as Magisterial Documents of the Catholic Church. In the final parts of the book, the author shows how Stein's ideas are relevant today, in particular to the ongoing doctrinal and legal debates over the concept of human dignity.

Ad oggi che le condizioni su cui è prosperata la democrazia in Occidente paiono mutate, anche l’affermazione di un universale diritto al lavoro ha visto diminuire i propri spazi e, con esso, a ridursi è risultata essere la legittimità delle istituzioni pubbliche, che si sono ritrovate nella condizione di non poter più garantire, in riferimento a tale fondamentale diritto, ciò che fino a qualche anno fa garantivano. Ci si è chiesto allora: come tentare di uscire da questa evidente crisi di legittimità? Si è provato a suggerire una definizione dei contorni reali ed ideali di un nuovo modello di riferimento di lavoro; si è cercato di ricollocare l’attività professionale all’interno della scala valoriale della comunità occidentale contemporanea; si è tentato di ridiscutere l’interconnessione tra “nuovi” diritti sociali e “nuove” forme di cittadinanza. Potrà apparire paradossale come, alle apparenti difficoltà che un percorso del genere ha lasciato intravedere sin da subito, si sia potuto rispondere con un dato, forse, tuttora, troppo trascurato. Riflettere sul lavoro, ha significato riflettere sull’uomo. Ripensare, in qualche maniera, il lavoro ha significato ripensare l’essere umano. E, parimenti, riflettere sulla legittimità politica – in cui, oggigiorno, il tema della relazione interpersonale mediante una azione come quella lavorativa riveste un peso più che rilevante – ha significato riflettere sull’uomo che la pensa, la vive. In altri termini, la anima.
