This study stems from discoveries in a trove of documents belonging to Charles-Henri de Lorraine, prince de Vaudâemont, who served as governor of Milan under the Spanish crown from 1698 to 1706. These documents, together with a mass of other sources - letters, diaries, treatises, libretti, scores - offer a vivid new picture of musical life in Paris and Milan as well as exchanges between France and Italy. The book is both a patronage study and an examination of the contributions by - and the difficulties facing - musicians and dancers who worked across national and cultural boundaries. Music, Dance, and Franco-Italian Cultural Exchange, c.1700 follows the careers of the prince and the French violinist and composer Michel Pignolet de Montâeclair. In the context of a renewed fascination with Italian music in the 1690s, Montâeclair made a name for himself in Paris as a pedagogue and composer who understood both national styles and blended them in a way that was successful on French terms. Vaudâemont hired Montâeclair to direct a French violin band and to compose dance music for a series of new operas that observers declared "the best in Italy" but are virtually unknown today. These productions involved collaborations among a mixed company of French and Italian musicians, dancers, composers, and librettists modeled on the practice of Turinese court operas. The book is an account of the contributions of these figures to the cultural life of Paris, Milan, and other northern Italian states, and to the creative mixing of musical styles, operatic conventions, and dance technique in France and Italy through the 1720s and beyond.

Il militare filosofo è un testo fondamentale per comprendere il materialismo francese del ’700. Pubblicato anonimo nel 1767, è frutto del lavoro congiunto di Jacques-André Naigeon e del barone d’Holbach. Rappresenta la riscrittura – radicalizzata – di un manoscritto già circolante tra gli eruditi francesi, Difficultés sur la religion proposées au Père Malebranche, che solo negli anni ’70 del XX secolo si è attribuito a Robert Challe, tra i padri del deismo francese. Naigeon, poi biografo di Denis Diderot, si serve del manoscritto per divulgare i principi dell’ateismo e per condurre la sua battaglia politico-culturale contro le religioni rivelate. D’Holbach, nell’ultimo capitolo del testo, fa le prove generali per il Système de la nature, di cui Le militaire philosophe è una sorta di anticipazione. Ironico, disincantato, coraggioso, il militare che si scopre pensatore rappresenta la coscienza filosofica del secolo, pronta ormai a liberarsi da qualsiasi tutela e a rifondare interamente la società.

Nel 1782 il padovano Giacomo Zigno, figura di cui si hanno pochi dati biografici, dà alle stampe la prima traduzione in lingua italiana dei canti I-X del poema Il Messia (Der Messias, 1748-1773) di Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, nonché del suo saggio Ragionamento dell’autore intorno alla poesia sacra (Von der heiligen Poesie, 1754-1755), presso l’editore Francesco Modena (Vicenza). Al testo della traduzione Zigno fa precedere una dedica all’autore e una dettagliata prefazione in cui ricostruisce la vicenda umana di Klopstock e il percorso di stesura del suo poema, contestualizzandolo all’interno dei dibattiti letterari ed estetici dell’epoca e alla luce della mediazione culturale tra Italia e Germania. Il presente volume ripropone la versione uscita nel 1838 a Milano presso Giovanni Silvestri, versione che coincide con quella del 1782, accompagnata da note esplicative e un saggio critico.
