Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was a French book illustrator prominent during the so called "Golden Age of Illustration." He spent a very brief period at the Acadmie Julien in Paris in 1904 before moving to London. He then began an association with the Leicester Gallery and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery would commission paintings from Dulac and then sell the rights to Hodder & Stoughton, who would publish the books while the gallery would sell the paintings. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from the Arabian Nights (1907), an edition of Shakespeare's The Tempest (1908), The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1909), Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (1911) and Princess Badoura (1913). During World War I he contributed to relief books, including King Albert's Book, Princess Mary's Gift Book, and, unusually, his own Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross (1915). After the war, the deluxe edition illustrated book became a rarity and Dulac's career in this field was over. His last such books were Edmund Dulac's Fairy Book (1916), the Tanglewood Tales (1918) and the exquisite The Kingdom of the Pearl (1920).

Edmund Dulac's Fairy-Book: Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations by Edmund Dulac. Once upon a time there lived a King and a Queen whose marriage was as happy as happy could be; they loved each other tenderly, and, in turn, their subjects loved them; but one thing clouded their life: and that was that they had no children, no heir. The Queen thought that the King would love her much more if she had a child. So she made up her mind to drink of the water of a certain spring. People came there in thousands from afar to drink of this special kind of water; and one saw so many that it looked as though all the world and his wife were there. Now there were many, many lovely fountains in the wood where the Queen and other people went to drink at the spring; so the Queen asked her ladies to lead the others away to these fountains to amuse themselves, and leave her alone. Then, when they had all withdrawn, she bewailed in a plaintive voice.

‘A Fairy Garland – Being Fairy Tales from the Old French’ contains a collection of stories, written by Charles Perrault, Madame D’Aulnoy and Count Anthony Hamilton. These individuals were among the first writers to bring magical children’s stories into the literary mainstream, proving to their original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. The stories in this particular text encompass favourites such as Perrault’s ‘Puss in Boots’ and ‘Riquet with the Tuft’ as well as other less well-known classics such as D’Aulnoy’s ‘The Green Dragon’, ‘Princess Rosetta’ and ‘The Blue Bird’ and Count Antony Hamilton’s dazzling ‘Mayblossom’. This edition of ‘A Fairy Garland’ further contains a set of dazzling coloured illustrations by a true master of the ‘Golden Age'; Edmund Dulac (1882 – 1953). A French artist himself, Dulac had a particular affinity with these Old French tales as well as a rigorously painterly background. The end result was beautifully coloured images which further refined the wonderful stories of Perrault, D’Aulnoy and Hamilton – all presented together in this book. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

A RUSSIAN FAIRY TALEThe old wife sang merrily as she sat in the inglenook stirring the soup, for she had never felt so sad. Many, many years had come and gone, leaving the weight of their winters on her shoulders and the touch of snow on her hair without ever bringing her a little child. This made her and her dear old husband very sad, for there were many children outside, playing in the snow. It seemed hard that not even one among them was their very own. But alas! there was no hope for such a blessing now. Never would they see a little fur cap hanging on the corner of the mantelpiece, nor two little shoes drying by the fire. The old husband brought in a bundle of wood and set it down. Then, as he heard the children laughing and clapping their hands outside, he looked out at the window. There they were, dancing with glee round a snow man they had made. He smiled as he saw that it was evidently meant to look like the Mayor of the village, it was so fat and pompous.'Look, Marusha!' he cried to the old wife. 'Come and see the snow man they've made.'As they stood together at the window, they laughed to see what fun the children got out of it. Suddenly the old man turned to her with a bright idea.
