A obra tem como objeto a educação do trabalhador nos ervais de Mato Grosso, no período correspondente aos anos de 1870-1930. O objetivo principal é compreender de que forma os ervateiros se educavam em seu trabalho. Parte-se do pressuposto que nesse trabalho havia uma ação educativa. Compõe-se de duas partes. A parte I, trata de uma revisão da historiografia regional, procurando captar a concepção de história, trabalho e cultura através de uma análise crítica que articula a relação entre singular e universal. Nos capítulos primeiro e segundo, descrevemos as principais obras que abordam esse trabalhador, ressaltando divergências encontradas, ponto de partida para a crítica, construída com base nas investigações realizadas na segunda parte do trabalho. O primeiro capítulo da segunda parte trata da educação do trabalhador ervateiro. A partir da categoria trabalho, tenta-se compreender como se dava a educação desse trabalhador. No capítulo segundo, caracteriza-se o processo de ocupação na fronteira, bem como o de formação de uma classe de proletários que vinha atender às necessidades de mão-de-obra do mate. No terceiro e último capítulo, busca-se alguns antecedentes históricos que provocaram a exploração da erva-mate em Mato Grosso, procurando evidenciar que por trás desse movimento existia uma nova composição do capital.

The Colonization of the Amazon, the resulting work, brings together information on the physical, demographic, institutional, and economic dimensions of directed settlement in the Amazon Basin and raises significant questions about the gains and losses of the settlers, the reasons for these outcomes, and the economic rationale behind the devastation of the rainforest. Particularly illuminating is Almeida's exploration of the role of the frontier in Brazil and her distinction between types of migrants and migrations. She concludes that the political costs avoided by not undertaking agrarian reform are being paid by devastating the Amazon, with the conflict between distribution and conservation steadily worsening.
