Esta obra nace con una modesta y única finalidad: servir de guía y orientación a los estudiantes de las diversas especialidades de la Diplomatura de Maestro que han de cursar la asignatura Bases Psicológicas de la Educación Especial. En el capítulo 1 se hace una revisión de lo que se entiende por fundamentación psicológica de la educación especial y se analiza el concepto de necesidades educativas especiales. El capítulo 2 se centra en el análisis del diseño instruccional en el ámbito de la educación especial y cómo se aborda éste a través del programa de integración escolar y de los recursos psicoeducativos disponibles. Y en el capítulo 3 se describen los factores determinantes (de riesgo, teratológicos y sociales) de las necesidades educativas especiales. Estos tres primeros capítulos constituyen una introducción a los siguientes que se ocupan, de un modo específico, de las necesidades educativas especiales transitorias y permanentes. El capítulo 4 se centra en el análisis de los problemas de aprendizaje derivados de retrasos del desarrollo y en la adquisición del lenguaje. De las dificultades de los aprendizajes escolares más relevantes (lectura y matemáticas), se ocupan los capítulos 6 y 7. Y el capítulo 8 trata las dificultades del aprendizaje de comportamientos socialmentes deseables. Los problemas para el desarrollo y el aprendizaje que conllevan las discapacidades, deficiencias y minusvalías más frecuentes se tratan en el resto de los capítulos. Así, el capítulo 9 se dedica a la discapacidad visual, el capítulo 10 a la discapacidad auditiva, el capítulo 11 a la discapacidad motriz, los capítulos 12 y 13 a las necesidades educativas especiales en el ámbito de la inteligencia (por retraso o superdotación intelectual) y el capítulo 14, para concluir se dedica al autismo y los problemas emocionales. En todos los tópicos tratados, se pretende combinar el carácter que requiere la formación científica con un enfoque aplicado, dado el carácter profesional que tiene la formación de Maestros. Por esto se introducen en la mayor parte de los capítulos, contenidos relativos a la intervención psicoeducativa.

This contributed volume explores equity and social justice within the field of mathematics education. In part one, Helga Jungwirth's introductory chapter provides a strong theoretical overview that is based in actual classroom behaviors and a typology that classifies the various interpretations found within this volume. Also in part one, Laurie Hart discusses developments in equity research in the United States. Part two focuses on results of studies about social justice and their impact on learning in mathematics classrooms in various parts of the world. For example, in a chapter on Peru, social justice does not just encompass gender, but also inequalities in opportunities to learn, such as problems of resources, living and social conditions, communal demands and language needs. And, part three focuses on computers as a resource to mathematics teaching. The contributors raise several important social justice issues which have previously remained unresearched. Although there are a number of chapters specifically dealing with gender, many of the authors use one of the following strategies: their gender-specific questions are set in a wider socio-cultural context, they challenge what have threatened to become false orthodoxies, or they raise other important issues. These other issues include the meaning of democratic citizenship for mathematics classrooms, the links between parents and children learning mathematics, and the preconceptions of some teachers of underprivileged students in Australia. Other chapters explore different forms of classroom communication, participation, and assessment. The pieces on computers state that there is still not enough research to conclude whether computers in the mathematics classrooms are supportive of, or detrimental to, the learning of all students. The one thing on which every author in this volume does agree is that social justice in mathematics education has still not been attained, but that we must strive toward it to improve educational practices and society in general.
