«È proprio nell'incontro-scontro tra la dimensione soggettiva e antropologica del lavoro e quello che possiamo indicare come ‘il principio di realtà' che si decide, in larga misura, il successo o l'insuccesso dell'Italia nel far fronte alla sfida posta dai mutamenti del contesto mondiale». Camillo RuiniUn profondo malessere affligge in Italia il mondo del lavoro; un malessere reso più drammatico dalla grave crisi economica in corso. I tratti di questo malessere sono molteplici e presentano in genere una maggiore gravità al Sud che al Centro e al Nord del paese. I motivi sono la scarsità endemica di lavoro, che colpisce soprattutto le generazioni più giovani e le donne; la mancanza di seri percorsi di formazione professionale; la rassegnazione di chi addirittura rinuncia o rifiuta alcune occupazioni, assegnate in modo quasi esclusivo a stranieri; la diffusione di lavori in nero, precari e mal pagati; la scarsità di apprendisti per l'artigianato, forse il patrimonio economico e culturale più grande del paese; il contrasto sempre più evidente tra i tempi del lavoro e i tempi della famiglia; un contesto istituzionale, giuridico e infrastrutturale fatiscente; e, ultimo ma non meno importante, una progressiva perdita di senso del lavoro stesso. Presi nel loro insieme questi aspetti mostrano in modo eloquente come nel malessere che affligge il mondo del lavoro si rifletta un malessere più generale che coinvolge l'intero paese.Questo Rapporto-proposta, nello spirito che ha contraddistinto i precedenti Rapporti – quello sull'educazione e quello sul cambiamento demografico – intende offrire un contributo di riflessione sul problema del lavoro e sulle sue diverse manifestazioni, suggerendo nel contempo alcune utili proposte.

Growing up in Walltown, Italy presents an ethnographic account of the culture of early childhood education, as it is constructed in two municipal schools (a nursery and a childhood school) of an Italian town, explored through extensive participant observation and interviews of educators, teachers, school coordinators, mothers, and cooks and school staff. After providing background information on Italian early childhood education, the author describes and interprets the process of children's insertion into the world of the school as a "passage" whose ritual steps—initially accompanied by a parent—are carefully prepared by educators and teachers, so that the "passengers" will successfully settle in, and become competent members and participants of the respective educational communities. The author focuses on the educational and cultural learning that children between six months and five years of age attain by exercising their agency, capacity for communication, interaction and responsibility, and imagination in planned educational projects, daily activities as the "reading time" and convivial appointments as meals. The educators' and teachers' professional and personal engagement and care, together with the collaboration of the other school people, are thoroughly illustrated, and their meaningful attention to, and respect for children's pace of learning and participation are pointed out.
