Education in the Arts: Principles and Practices for Teaching covers the teaching of visual art, drama, dance and music in primary and early childhood education, within the context of integrated creative arts education. It links theory and research to teaching practice, and allows teacher education students to apply what they have learned to new contexts. It encourages reflection upon teaching practice through real case studies, and provides direction for considering what it means to be an arts education teacher in a school, rather than an art, music or drama specialist. The text is a valuable resource for both students and teachers, with guidance on how to implement the various arts practices in a school setting.

In Performative Approaches in Arts Education, researchers, artists and practitioners from philosophy and the arts elaborate on what performative approaches can contribute to 21st century arts education. Introducing new perspectives on learning, the contributors provide a central international perspective, developing a paradigm in which the artist, teacher and researcher's form of teaching is enmeshed with content, and human agency is entangled with non-human matter. The book explores issues connected to both teaching and learning in the arts, engaging in debates about the value of meaning making in the artistic process, the way social ethos can guide performative approaches and the changes in education that performative approaches can bring. Performative Approaches in Arts Education will be of great interest to academics, researchers and post-graduate students in the fields of arts education, philosophy of education and education research methods. It will also appeal to teachers and teacher educators, artists and teaching artists.

Wicked Arts Assignments are bold, unusual, contrary, funny, poetical, inspiring, socially committed, or otherwise challenging. Everyone who teaches art knows them: the assignment that is seemingly simple but which challenges participants, students and pupils to the max. Many artists and arts teachers have that singular, personal, often-used assignment in which everything comes together: their artistic vision, their pedagogical approach and their love for certain techniques or methods.00The almost hundred arts assignments collected here connect to the visual arts, performance, theatre, music and design, but more importantly: they encourage cross-disciplinarity. They reflect themes and ways of working in contemporary arts, offering opportunities to learn about ourselves, the arts and the world.00The first part of this book provides a theoretical view on arts assignments from historical, artistic and educational perspectives, complemented by interviews with experts in contemporary arts and education. The second part consists of the actual wicked arts assignments. These can be carried out in various contexts: from primary schools to higher education, from home to the (online) community, and from Bogotá to Istanbul. They are meant to spark the imagination of both teachers and students, contributing to new, topical educational and artistic practices.

Since the early 1980s, the Getty Center for Education in the Arts, an operating entity of the J. Paul Getty Trust, has been committed to improving the quality of aesthetic learning in our nation's schools and museums. According to the organizing idea of the center's educational policy, teaching about the visual arts can be rendered more effective through the incorporation of concepts and activities from a number of interrelated disciplines, namely, artistic creation, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. The resultant discipline-based approach to art education does not, however, mandate that these four disciplines be taught separately; rather, the disciplines are to provide justifications, subject matter, and methods as well as exemplify attitudes that are relevant to the cultivation of percipience in matters of art. They offer different analytical contexts to aid our understanding and aesthetic enjoyment, contexts such as the making of unique objects of visual interest (artistic creation), the apprehension of art under the aspects of time, tradition, and style (art history), the reasoned judgment of artistic merit (art criticism), and the critical analysis of basic aesthetic concepts and puzzling issues (aesthetics). Discipline-based art education thus assumes that our ability to engage works of art intelligently requires not only our having attempted to produce artworks and gained some awareness of the mysteries and difficulties of artistic creation in the process, but also our having acquired familiarity with art's history, its principles of judgment, and its conundrums.
