Excerpt from Education in Central Europe First, it must be remarked that the course of education sketched in the following lines is designed for boys, because trades and industrial fields in Germany are, as a rule, not crowded with women. Every boy, then, may attend a public elementary school, the so-called people's school, which offers instruction gratuitously. If he and his parents conclude to aim at a higher education than the elementary schools offer, he may enter one of the twelve higher burger schools in Berlin, called Realschulen, which are so organized that a boy coming from the elemen tary schools at the age of 12 years may at once enter the fourth grade, above which instruction in foreign languages begins. These schools admit pupils at 10 years of age, but in the first two years the. Chief work consists of language (mother tongue), history, a little of the science of physics, and geometry. These high schools are of course without Latin. The graduates of these institutions receive the privilege of only one year's army service. Excerpt from Observations on Higher Education in Europe The following article is the result of a visit made by the writer to the countries of western and southern Europe last summer and fall to study conditions of higher education there. In a brief article like this only the salient features can be mentioned. I shall first state those which apply to the European countries generally and then those which apply only to the individual countries. In each case I shall try to indicate how the educational relations between the foreign countries and the United States are affected. Excerpt from Makers of Europe, Outlines of European History, for the Middle Forms of Schools That such a state of things has so long existed accounts probably for the astonishing lack of interest shown by the majority of young people in a study, which, if intelligently worked at, is full of delight and romance. Our fellow-teachers on the Continent have, I believe, anticipated us in this matter, yet it seems as though England has an especial need of reading her own history in the light of other lands. For her very isolation during her earlier days, and her ambition and aggressive desire of extension later on, brought her into close touch with Europe at all the turning-points of her development. 80 close indeed has been this connection that the greater part of her history can only be fully understood when we place it against the background of European life and progress. Who, for example. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Modern European Civilization: A Textbook for Secondary Schools A large part of a book on Europe during the three cen turies since 1648 can wisely be devoted to the history of the last fifty years or to a study of conditions in the early twentieth century. The author regrets that the limits of this volume have forced him to omit a great deal of material that he has used for years with his own students. In deciding what to discard and what to keep, he has tried to select those topics of permanent value which are also most vital to a comprehension of problems likely to arise during the next five or ten years. It has been nec essary to retain some material, on the youngest and most aggressive of the nations, which most of us would have preferred to omit. Unless we know the history of middle Europe during the last century and study carefully condi tions in those countries and characteristics of those peoples, we shall fail absolutely to understand why the world has been involved in a terrible war since 1914 and what peace conditions are likely to be permanent. Excerpt from European Schools: Or What I Saw in the Schools of Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland Anglo-saxon teachers will read what is said of the great Herbartian movement in educational theory with wonder and curiosity. The idea of concentric instruo tion, with Robinson Crusoe for the center of interest; the glimpses of earnest and thorough discussions of prin ciples and practice in the light of the subtle psychology of Herbart, the counter-movement of the opposing school of philosophy - what singular phenomena in the history of education, and how suggestive of the originality and thoroughness of the German mind! Instructive glances at the education of women for teachers in this book make us conscious of the consider able distance that separates our system of educational management from that of the Continent of Europe. Does it seem likely that the latter has begun to move on in the direction-we have taken, and that it will follow us in giv ing higher education to girls, and afterward place women in charge of its schools as extensively as Americans have done?
