An Inaugural Professorial Lecture When the Institute of Education's International Centre for Intercultural Studies (ICIS) was set up in 1979 there were major issues centring on the reduction of discrimination and inequality on its agenda. In this lecture Professor Gundara discusses ways in which issues of equity, knowledge, race and religion are being addressed today, the challenges they pose to the education system, and possible solutions to these challenges. Professor Gundara argues that there are a number of 'brinks' within the field of education, which he views from an intercultural perspective - these include issues of economic globalisation, educational inequity, knowledge centrism, racism and religious intolerance, the inadequacy of current teacher education, and the media. A Year on the Brink recounts a year in the life of veteran middle school teacher, Randi Jacobs. The year is further complicated when Randi is inadvertently drawn into a criminal investigation by an earnest student who comes to her with a story of an odd citing, made while "Trick-or-Treating" at another student's home. As May turns to June and the time for indecision passes amid the end-of-schoolyear hubbub, Randi sorts through the components of her life and considers her options in order to come to a final decision.
