Educational Outcomes for Students With Disabilities provides readers with the most current perspectives on outcomes that are certain to have an influence on the services they provide. A shift from a focus on the process of education for students with disabilities to a focus on measurable outcomes is occurring and is permeating every level of education, from policy on down to the classroom. This book helps readers think about and prepare for changes in how they provide services. To begin preparing readers for change, the book presents a wide range of topics, beginning with clarifying definitions and historical groundings for the emphasis on outcomes. The authors cover everything from a perspective on the controversial Outcome Based Education (OBE) approach to guidelines on how to use existing data on outcomes. Ways to think about outcomes beyond academics and in alternative settings are addressed as well. Chapters also address different perspectives on what outcomes should be for even young children with disabilities. The contributing authors of this book represent a range of professionals--researchers, policymakers, advocates--whose work helps support student attainment of positive educational outcomes. Individual subjects addressed include: assessment data collection standards opportunity to learn outcome based education (OBE) school reform alternative programs indicators accountability Educational Outcomes for Students With Disabilities is a current synthesis of what specialists know about educational outcomes for students with disabilities. It highlights how new ideas will change how school personnel--school counselors and psychologists; supervisors; social workers; speech and language therapists; occupational and physical therapists; and SEA/LEA administrators--educate their students with disabilities.

Shaping The Culture Of Schooling written by Cheryl Taylor Desmond and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-07-03 with Education categories.

Focusing on the cultural history of the origins of outcome-based education (OBE), this book investigates the social and economic culture of Johnson City, New York, schools. OBE has often been proclaimed the salvation for ailing American schools and has spread to thousands of school districts throughout the United States. The reform has also been the lightning rod for fierce challenges from community members who oppose OBE's dismantling of the bell-shaped curve and its promotion of secular humanism. The author uncovers the messy business of school change and its deep roots in the values of the local community and economy. Grounding the story historically and theoretically, Desmond analyzes the reshaping of the Johnson City schools from a production mill for blue collar workers to a development center of technologically minded, middle-class, well-educated citizens. She argues that the heart of successful, synergistic school reform lies in the consensus that children have unlimited learning capacity and a long-term moral leadership that is committed to caring, reciprocal relationships of power.

Outcome-based education (OBE) means clearly focusing and organizing everything in an educational system around what is essential for all students to be able to do successfully at the end of their learning experiences. This book examines the issues critical to understanding and implementing OBE. Chapter 1 addresses a range of issues related to the meaning of the term "outcome-based education." It defines key terms and concepts and describes the foundations of genuine outcome-based models. The second chapter links current interest in OBE to global socioeconomic changes. Chapter 3 examines some important issues surrounding the meaning of outcomes and how they are derived. Four major trends are identified in the fourth chapter--classroom reform, program alignment, external accountability, and system transformation. Chapter 5 shows how the effects of OBE on students and schools depends on which implementation approach is used. Common misconceptions about OBE are clarified in the sixth chapter. The final chapter discusses future directions of OBE, in particular, how to sustain it over time. OBE appears to have a viable future if democratic processes and strong professional norms prevail in society and education, respectively. Twenty-five figures and a glossary are included. (LMI)

Ambitious programs of education reform have been introduced by many governments around the world. Reforming Education is an important study of large-scale education reform in five different settings: England, New Zealand, the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Manitoba and the US state of Minnesota. The book looks at a variety of reforms covering: school choice; charter schools; increased testing of students; stricter curriculum guidelines; and local school management. Drawing from theoretical and empirical work in education, political theory, organizational theory and public administration, Reforming Education provides a clearly developed conceptual framework of analyzing reform programs. The author reviews the political origins of the reforms, the process of adoption into law, the implementation processes used to support the reforms and the results of the reforms for students, schools and communities.
