The Critical Turn in Education traces the historical emergence and development of critical theories in the field of education, from the introduction of Marxist and other radical social theories in the 1960s to the contemporary critical landscape. The book begins by tracing the first waves of critical scholarship in the field through a close, contextual study of the intellectual and political projects of several core figures including, Paulo Freire, Samuel Bowles and Herbert Gintis, Michael Apple, and Henry Giroux. Later chapters offer a discussion of feminist critiques, the influx of postmodernist and poststructuralist ideas in education, and critical theories of race. While grounded in U.S. scholarship, The Critical Turn in Education contextualizes the development of critical ideas and political projects within a larger international history, and charts the ongoing theoretical debates that seek to explain the relationship between school and society. Today, much of the language of this critical turn has now become commonplace—words such as "hegemony," "ideology," and the term "critical" itself—but by providing a historical analysis, The Critical Turn in Education illuminates the complexity and nuance of these theoretical tools, which offer ways of understanding the intersections between individual identities and structural forces in an attempt to engage and overturn social injustice.

Elise Boulding has been among the most influential of social reformers to advocate the integration of peace studies and women's studies. Her ideas inspired a number of works addressing the role of the family in producing social change and discussing women's unique capacity for promoting peace through nurturing and networking. Boulding's additional ideas on transnational networks and their relationship to global understanding are considered seminal contributions to modern peace studies and have earned her the title of "matriarch" of the 20th century peace movement. This biography is divided into three parts. The first and third deal chronologically with the life of Elise Boulding, beginning with her childhood experiences as a Scandinavian immigrant. The 1940 Nazi invasion of Norway significantly influenced her concepts of pacifism and Quaker spiritualism, laying the foundation for her future work as a leader in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and her dynamic professional partnership with and marriage to the internationally known Quaker economist and poet Kenneth Boulding. Part Two expounds upon Boulding's philosophy of education, her role as a member of the Religious Society of Friends, her espousal of the conceptual evolution of cultures of peace, and her theoretical work in women's studies and peace research. In recognition of these achievements, Boulding has been the recipient of more than 19 awards and was a 1990 nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Teaching As Radical Logic written by Alex J. Armonda and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-15 with Social Science categories.

Teaching as Radical Logic: Dialectic, Analectic, and Education features original contributions from leading scholars in the fields of decolonial theory, Marxist theory, and critical education. This volume revitalizes the cross-fertilizing dialogue between traditions that historically propelled global anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist political movements, while restoring to pedagogy its central role as an organizing principle for liberation. At the same time, this volume explores the necessary ground of teaching in fundamental logics of radical thought and action. Starting from an engagement with the philosophical traditions of dialectics and analectics, and challenging familiar partitions between academic orientations and disciplines, the chapters in this volume extend currents in critical theory to offer original analyses of the fundamental organization of capitalism and coloniality in schooling and beyond. Contributors propose new approaches to radical and decolonizing praxis which take teaching seriously as a site for theoretical commitment and creativity. Refusing the notion of method as procedure, these interventions propose modes of critical pedagogical engagement that are at once rigorous and imaginative, and that operate across the diverse contexts and registers of contemporary classrooms, community spaces, and political life.

and racial justice during a critical era in southern and Appalachian history. This volume is the first comprehensive examination of that extraordinary—and often controversial—institution. Founded in 1932 by Myles Horton and Don West near Monteagle, Tennessee, this adult education center was both a vital resource for southern radicals and a catalyst for several major movements for social change. During its thirty-year history it served as a community folk school, as a training center for southern labor and Farmers' Union members, and as a meeting place for black and white civil rights activists. As a result of the civil rights involvement, the state of Tennessee revoked the charter of the original institution in 1962. At the heart of Horton's philosophy and the Highlander program was a belief in the power of education to effect profound changes in society. By working with the knowledge the poor of Appalachia and the South had gained from their experiences, Horton and his staff expected to enable them to take control of their own lives and to solve their own problems. John M. Glen's authoritative study is more than the story of a singular school in Tennessee. It is a biography of Myles Horton, co-founder and long-time educational director of the school, whose social theories shaped its character. It is an analysis of the application of a particular idea of adult education to the problems of the South and of Appalachia. And it affords valuable insights into the history of the southern labor and the civil rights movements and of the individuals and institutions involved in them over the past five decades.

Multiculturalism And Education written by Thomas J. La Belle and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-01-01 with Education categories.

This book introduces multiculturalism and its relationship to education and schooling, while also highlighting current approaches to multicultural education and placing them in a broad comparative and international context. Through a comparative view that is both domestic and international, the book explores ethnicity, race, class, and education (kindergarten through higher education) as they interact to integrate populations, while also serving vested interests and enhancing group identity and status. The authors position multiculturalism as a political and social phenomena that affects and interacts with education and its institutions. To do this, they draw upon international cases as well as the history of segmentation and integration in the United States.
