I bambini con un ritardo nello sviluppo delle abilità cognitive vengono oggi inseriti in percorsi riabilitativi appena i problemi si manifestano; inizia così un percorso lungo e faticoso per aiutare il bimbo a sviluppare ed acquisire quelle capacità cognitive e comportamentali che per diversi fattori neurobiologici e/o psicologici non si presentano, evolvono e maturano con i tempi e le modalità che sono loro propri, in accordo con la crescita dell'età. In questo lavoro, dopo un breve esame dello stato dell'arte riguardo il ritardo mentale, viene illustrato un protocollo di intervento di stimolazione cognitivo-comportamentale, fornendo schede-guida operative per la sua attuazione. Il trattamento proposto è volto ad affiancare ed integrare le terapie di riabilitazione cognitiva cui vengono sottoposti i bambini con ritardo mentale, nello specifico i bambini con sindrome di Down. Gli obiettivi della stimolazione cognitivo-comportamentale proposta sono di favorire la generalizzazione delle competenze cognitive raggiunte nella vita quotidiana e di promuovere la acquisizione di autonomie comportamentali stimolando le abilità cognitive la loro reciproca integrazione attraverso attività e situazioni della vita di tutti i giorni. Il libro si rivolge perciò alle figure professionali che intervengono e cooperano nel percorso riabilitativo del bambino con sindrome di Down e con ritardo mentale in genere. (editore).
