Considered the first important American painter in 20th-century art, Edward Hopper (1882-1967) used color and light to create a mood of transcendent melancholy in images of the streets, houses, and lost souls of pre- and postwar America. This Spanish-language book also shows Hopper's other side - the painter of landscapes in warm brown hues and seascapes that exude a lyrical tranquility.

Using recreated itineraries, travel along with Edward Hopper on his various road trips and encounter hotels, staff, and guests as seen through the artist's eyes The painter, draftsman, and illustrator Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is one of America's best-known and most frequently exhibited artists. Hotels, motels, and tourist homes are recurring motifs in his work, along with streets, lighthouses, and gas stations forming a visual vocabulary of transportation infrastructure. In ten essays, this fascinating volume explores Hopper's lifelong investigation of such spaces, shedding light on both his professional practice and far-reaching changes in transportation and communications, which affected not only work and leisure but also dynamics of race, class, and gender. Hopper's covers for the trade journal Hotel Management, in addition to other well-known works, invite reflection on the complicated roles of the nascent New Woman; the erasure of hotel work and workers; contemporary associations of the color white with cleanliness and purity; the watercolors Hopper made from hotel windows and rooftops in Mexico; and the broader context of transportation history. A final chapter then situates Hopper's contribution to the fascinating role that the hotel has played in the broader development of American art in the 20th century. As a unique feature, the book's backflap also holds two "TripTik"-like, removable maps that trace the journeys that Hopper and his wife, the artist Josephine "Jo" Nivison Hopper, took by car in the 1940s and 1950s; selected correspondence and quotations from Jo's own diaries join reproductions of postcards and ephemera illuminating their--and fellow Americans'--shifting travel habits. Edward Hopper S New England written by Carl Little and has been published by Pomegranate Communications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with New England categories.
One of the most important American painters of the twentieth century, Edward Hopper spent nearly every summer of his prolific career in New England. Coastal views, mansard-roofed houses and a still light inspired many of his greatest works. This collection presents some of Hopper's finest paintings of New England, providing a guide to the places that resonated so deeply with the artist throughout his career. Carl Little's essay examines the crucial role New England played in Hopper's development and considers the full range of his work set in the Northeast: early etchings and radiant watercolours; architectural paintings of Victorian mansions, factories, barns, and summer cottages; and the magnificent sailing pictures through which Hopper expressed his lifelong love of the sea. Also included are late-career psychological paintings-composites of the landscape with figures - which convey the loneliness and isolation for which Hopper's work is best known. Works in this book are from the collections of over twenty-five museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is considered the first significant American painter in 20th-century art. After decades of patient work, Hopper enjoyed a success and popularity that since the 1950s has continually grown. In canvas after canvas he painted the loneliness of big-city people. Many of Hopper's pictures represent views of streets and roads, rooftops, and abandoned houses, depicted in a brilliant light that strangely belies the melancholy mood of the scenes. Hopper's paintings are marked by striking juxtapositions of colour, and by the clear contours with which the figures are demarcated from their surroundings. His extremely precise focus on the theme of modern men and women in the natural and man-made environment sometimes lends his pictures a mood of eerie disquiet. On the other hand, Hopper's renderings of rocky landscapes in warm brown hues, or his depictions of the seacoast, exude an unusual tranquillity that reveals another, more optimistic side of his character.

As a boy, Edward Hopper knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up: on the cover of his pencil box, he wrote the words EDWARD HOPPER, WOULD-BE ARTIST. He traveled to New York and to Paris to hone his craft. And even though no one wanted to buy his paintings for a long time, he never stopped believing in his dream to be an artist. He was fascinated with painting light and shadow and his works explore this challenge. Edward Hopper's story is one of courage, resilience, and determination. In this striking picture book biography, Robert Burleigh and Wendell Minor invite young readers into the world of a truly special American painter (most celebrated for his paintings "Nighthawks" and "Gas").
