This study provides an authoritative overview of all Marlowe's work. It includes thorough investigations of his major plays, Tamburlaine, Edward II, The Jew of Malta and Doctor Faustus as well as a full discussion of The Massacre at Paris, Dido Queen of Carthage and all his extant poetry. Analysis of Faustus takes full account of both A and B text versions. Thoroughly researched and yet presented in an accessible, engaging style, A Preface to Marlowe reads Marlowe's life and times, as well as his work, in the light of current critical theory. Consequently, it is a vital guide for all students of early modern drama. As well as providing sharp analysis of stage history, Dr Simkin reflects on the wider significance of a stage-oriented approach. The result is a reading of Marlowe that re-opens debates about his status as a radical figure and as a subversive playwright and invites the reader to experience the plays as immediate, exciting, 'live' documents.

In Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus a distinguished scholar turns away from learning and embraces necromancy to satisfy his yearning for knowledge, power and influence. Faustus trades his soul to Lucifer for the secrets of the universe, only to find that satisfaction remains beyond his grasp. His quest for fame and thirst for knowledge eventually results in his damnation. One of the most spectacular and popular plays of the Elizabethan stage, Faustus' fantastical mix of high-minded theology and low-brow slapstick has allured generations of readers and playgoers in the ensuing centuries. Christopher Marlowe's Faustus has been regularly rewritten, adapted, performed, and parodied across the ages, speaking to its tenacious grip upon the public imagination. This fully re-edited, modernised play text is accompanied by incisive commentary notes, while its lively introduction will helpfully guide you through the fume of fact and legend that has accompanied the play across the centuries, from its premiere in the late sixteenth century to its most recent incarnation on stage and film. The New Mermaids plays offer: · Modernized versions of the play text edited to the highest textual standards · Fully annotated student editions with obscure words explained and critical, contextual and staging insight provided on each page · Full introductions analyzing content, themes, author background and stage history

Edward II is a Renaissance or Early Modern period play written by Christopher Marlowe. It is one of the earliest English history plays. The full title of the first publication is The Troublesome Reign and Lamentable Death of Edward the Second, King of England, with the Tragical Fall of Proud Mortimer. The play was entered into the Stationers' Register on July 6, 1593, five weeks after Marlowe's death. Christopher "Kit" Marlowe (1564-1593) was an English dramatist, poet and translator of the Elizabethan era. The foremost Elizabethan tragedian next to William Shakespeare, he is known for his magnificent blank verse, his overreaching protagonists, and his own mysterious and untimely death. His first drama was Dido, Queen of Carthage. His first play performed on the London stage was Tamburlaine about the conqueror Timur, who rises from shepherd to warrior. It is among the first English plays in blank verse. Tamburlaine was a success, and was followed with Tamburlaine Part II. The two parts were published in 1590; however all of Marlowe's other works were published posthumously. They include: The Jew of Malta, - about a Maltese Jew's barbarous revenge against the city authorities, which has a prologue delivered by a character representing Machiavelli - Edward the Second, The Massacre at Paris and The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, based on the German Faustbuch, the first dramatised version of the Faust legend of a scholar's dealing with the devil. Marlowe also wrote poetry, including a, possibly, unfinished minor epic, Hero and Leander and the popular lyric The Passionate Shepherd to His Love.

Christopher Marlowe lived a life that echoed the violence in his plays. He was born in 1564 and was murdered in 1593 in what is speculated to be a political assassination. An educated man, he received both his B. A. and M. A. at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where it is believed that he wrote Part I of "Tamberlaine", and possibly "Dido Queen of Carthage". Machiavellian themes are present in much of Marlowe's work, the main characters constantly involved in a tumultuous upward climb toward unattainable infinite success. Marlowe's perhaps greatest legacy was introducing blank verse into English theatre with "Tamburlaine The Great, Part I." This collection includes: "Dido Queen of Carthage", "Tamburlaine, Parts I & II", "The Jew of Malta", "The Massacre At Paris", "Edward The Second", "The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus", "The First Book of Lucan", "Ovid's Elegies", and "Hero and Leander".
