'Deeply moving! Many people will be touched by this story.' Adriaan van Dis, international bestselling author A small town in Wales in 2006. Betrys, now in her late eighties, still longs for Morgan, the love of her life who perished during Operation Market Garden, as the Second World War was winding to a close. A Dutch writer inadvertently gets caught up in this story from long ago, in a way he could have never imagined. Based on a fascinating true story, Morgan, My Love is a surprising, romantic narrative that explores controversial assumptions about the soul's passage beyond death. Bas Steman is the author of several successful Dutch books and Morgan, een liefde is now in its eighth printing. It clearly struck a chord with Dutch readers, while the story is also Welsh at heart. 'A stunning book about body and soul, life and death, love and war.' Dutch newspaper De Stentor 'Startingly poignant and moving.' Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad 'Utterly original. A unique and fascinating story.' Lidewijde Paris, Dutch book critic

The novel's frank treatment of sexuality and psychological complexity set it apart from the more conventional works of its time. From its numerous coffee shops where drugs are openly available, to its world-famous Red Light District where prostitutes display themselves in shop windows, Amsterdam is a city where almost anything goes in broad daylight. And yet, this serene city of canals has its dark side as well. In fifteen tales of greed, jealousy and revenge, some of the finest Dutch crime writers—including literary award-winners and international bestsellers—explore the seamy shadows of this historic city. Amsterdam Noir features brand-new stories by: Michael Berg, Anneloes Timmerije, Murat Isik, René Appel & Josh Pachter, Simon de Waal, Hanna Bervoets, Karin Amatmoekrim, Christine Otten, Mensje van Keulen, Max van Olden, Theo Capel, Loes den Hollander, Herman Koch, Abdelkader Benali, and Walter van den Berg, whose story "Get Rich Quick" won the inaugural Literatuurprijs Nieuw-West award.

In any definition of terms, Dutch literature must be taken to mean all literature written in Dutch, thus excluding literature in Frisian, even though Friesland is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the same way as literature in Welsh would be excluded from a history of English literature. Simi larly, literature in Afrikaans (South African Dutch) falls outside the scope of this book, as Afrikaans from the moment of its birth out of seventeenth-century Dutch grew up independently and must be regarded as a language in its own right. . Dutc:h literature, then, is the literature written in Dutch as spoken in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the so-called Flemish part of the Kingdom of Belgium, that is the area north of the linguistic frontier which runs east-west through Belgium passing slightly south of Brussels. For the modern period this definition is clear anough, but for former times it needs some explanation. What do we mean, for example, when we use the term 'Dutch' for the medieval period? In the Middle Ages there was no standard Dutch language, and when the term 'Dutch' is used in a medieval context it is a kind of collective word indicating a number of different but closely related Frankish dialects. The most important of those were the dialects of the duchies of Limburg and Brabant, and of the counties of Flanders and Holland.
