De grote hausse aan niet-Europese adoptiekinderen kwam in 1970 op gang. Al na tien jaar werd duidelijk dat deze adopties weliswaar meestal succesvol verliepen, maar dat er voor een kwart van het aantal geadopteerden en hun gezinnen toch ook ernstige en vaak onoplosbare problemen door ontstonden. Verschillende instanties en personen hebben daarna van alles ondernomen om adoptiegezinnen steun te bieden en hun omstandigheden te verbeteren. Het resultaat van al die inspanningen zou merkbaar moeten zijn bij de volgende generatie die rond 1995 kinderen adopteerde. Hans Walenkamp heeft uitgezocht of dat inderdaad zo is. Hij heeft diepgaand en zeer invoelend gesproken met tien echtparen waarbij adoptie in de jaren zeventig op een mislukking is uitgelopen. Ter vergelijking en even indringend heeft hij twintig adoptie-echtparen van de tweede generatie geïnterviewd. De vraag is natuurlijk of die tweede generatie iets heeft opgestoken van de eerste. Hans Walenkamp bedrijft met dit boek geen wetenschap, maar wat hij wel doet is minstens zo waardevol. Hij brengt zijn gedachtes en opvattingen als ervaringsdeskundige in contact met de adoptiepraktijk van de afgelopen vier decennia. Hij verschaft de lezer een soms confronterende kijk in het privéleven van adoptiegezinnen. En hij onderzoekt of en in hoeverre adoptieouderschap verschilt van gewoon ouderschap en of adoptie voor doorsnee ouders eigenlijk wel te doen is. Pasklare antwoorden geeft hij niet, maar bepaalde tendensen en ontwikkelingsmogelijkheden zijn wel degelijk aanwijsbaar.

Zij wordt er verliefd op een jongen aan de overkant van de straat en krijgt een kind. Niet lang daarna gaat zij als alleenstaande moeder door geldnood gedwongen zelf ook het vak in en schopt het uiteindelijk tot bedrijfsleider van een klein seksimperium in de Amsterdamse Pijp. Maar dat succes heeft een prijs: ze moet haar kind ervoor in de steek laten. Dit verhaal over Carolien Brusik en de mensen in haar omgeving is gebaseerd op gegevens uit de prostitutieregisters en gemeente- en politiearchieven van Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Den Haag en Deventer.
