An attempt was made to study the effect of different rations containing varied proportions of concentrate mixture wheat straw and legume hay on the milk production effeciency of ration combination on the composition of milk was also investigated. Milk production in buffaloes reduced significantly in winter and was influenced by ration. Dry matter required for producing unit milk was lowest in group 11 (fed with 60% berseem hay and 40% wheat straw) animals as compared to group 1 (berseem only) and 111 (concentrate mixture according to their requirement and wheat straw as sole roughage). TDN require for producing unit milk was also least in group 11 when compared with group 1 and 11 requirement of different categaries of energy needed for producing 1kg milk was lowest in group 11 fallowed by groups 1 and 111. Protein conversion efficiency was maximum in group 11 even though intake was mimimum. Maximum amounts of metabolizable energy was used for meeting the maintaince requirements of animals maintainance energy available for maintenance and milk production was more in group 1 and 11 animals. Gross energitic efficiency of milk production was maximum in group 11 animals and least in group 111 animals.

The overall average birth weight 6 months weight and 12 months weight was 31.9, 113.4 and 194.1 Kg respectively. The average of age and weight at matarity age and weight of first calving were 840.2 days, 329.8 kg,1253.3 days and 436.3 Kg respectively. The average post partum heat interval was found to be slightly higher in the primiparus animals (83.7 days) compared to 80.1 days in pluriparous animals. The average number of services per conception was found to be 1.9 in pluriparous purchased animalswhile it was very low (1.41) in pluriparous farm breed animals. The influence of the sex of the calf and the parity order was found tohave no significant influence on the reproductive traits studied. The inital yield, peak yield and 305 days yield were found to be significantly influenced by both the season of calving and parity order in pluriparus farm bsed animals while lactation lenghth, dry period and total lactation yield were found to be significantly influenced by season of calving only. The sex of the calf was found to exert no significantly effect on any of the production traits studied. It was observed that season had a significant association with the time of onset of heat in murrah buffaloes. More number of onsets were observed between 8PM. to 8 AM.

It was observed that level of feeding and season, both had significant effect on the milk yield and its composition. It was further observed that to maintain the richness of milk without loosing the body weight in winter season, the cows require a ration containing higher energy and protein. Significant effect of level of feeding and season was also observed on the physiological behaviour and body weight of animals. The change in body weight revealed that the cows tried to maintain the milk produ : uction by utilising their body reserves. These results further confirmed that to maintain the optimum level of milk production in winter season, it is esential that the animals should be fed with higher level of TDN and DCP than suggested. These investigations further revealed that upto 11 kg of 4 percent FCM could be produced by feeding good quality roughage like berseem and lucerne. As regards input output relationship, it was found that berseem feeding was cheapest followed by lucerne and oats silage.

The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of body size measure like weight height at withers heart girth paunch girth and length on efficiency parameters. Among friesian brown swiss and jersey crosses 1/2 friesian crosses had generally highest income over feed cost econimic efficiency and production efficiency and brown swiss crosses lowest among the three breed crosses fallowed by 3/4 holstein. Friesian and jersey crosses which were more or less the same effects of year breed season milk price levels and feed cost levels were found to be significant where as when considered along with regressions on milk and body weight these were observed to be non-significant in all of the genetic group. Efficiency parameters were significantly positively related among themselves where as feed cost parameters like a feed cost/animal feed cost per 50 kg milk were significantly negatively related with each other regression of economic efficiency parameters and milk yield on body measurement like height at wither and paunch observed to be important in determining the profit from individual animal.
