This report focuses on the effect an alternative polyurethane coating has on the bond performance compared with plain rebar. Twelve beam-end specimens were cast with six concrete specimens each containing one #8 plain reinforcing bar and six concrete specimens each containing one #8 coated reinforcing bar. Development length, cover depth, and presence of a coating were variables during testing. It was observed that coating thickness had the greatest effect on the overall strength capacity of the concrete specimens. The thick alternative polyurethane coating resulted in a strength decrease when compared to plain rebars. An increase in development length caused an increase in both strength and stiffness in coated and uncoated rebar. Concrete specimens with uncoated rebar saw an increase in capacity as cover increased but concrete specimens with coated bars saw a decrease in strength capacity.

Prefabricated epoxy-coated reinforcement is used increasingly in reinforced concrete construction in which high corrosion resistance is required. It is well established that epoxy coating reduces bond strength between reinforcement and concrete, and some tests have found that bond strength decreases as coating thickness increases. For prefabricated epoxy-coated reinforcement, it can be difficult to maintain coating thicknesses within required tolerances 175 to 300 im. Beam-end tests were carried out on uncoated bars, bars with green epoxy coating (203 im coating thickness), and prefabricated (gray) epoxy coating (203 to 508 im coating thickness). Tests showed that epoxy coating reduces bond strength, with similar reductions for green and gray coatings. In some cases, bond strength decreased with increasing coating thickness, but for the range of thicknesses investigated the reduction factor of current building codes was found to be conservative

The effects of hole preparation method, grout type, hole diameter, bar size, embedment length, cover, reinforcing bar deformation pattern, bar surface condition (epoxy coated or uncoated), orientation of the installed bar, and concrete strength on the bond strength of grouted reinforcing bars are described. Hole preparation methods, using a high-speed vacuum drill or a hand-held pneumatic hammer drill, and cleaning methods, using a fiber bottle brush with water, a fiber bottle brush without water, or compressed air only, are compared. Two capsule systems, two two-component grout systems, and two nonshrink grout systems are evaluated. Hole diameters range from 0.75 to 1.5 in. for No. 5 bars; 1.25 in. diameter holes are used for No. 8 bars. Embedment lengths range from 4 to 12 in. for No. 5 bars and from 6 to 15 in. for No. 8 bars. 1.5 and 3.0 in. covers are used. Two bar deformation patterns are evaluated. Bar installations include vertical, sloped, and horizontal. Concrete strengths range from 2700 to 5900 psi. Test results are used to develop rational design and construction requirements. A standard test to establish the Strength Class of a grout for anchoring reinforcing bars is proposed. In addition, a test method currently in use by one state department of transportation as a technique for proof-testing grouted reinforcement in the field is evaluated.
