This study concerns the manner in which the accuracy of quantitative scale readings varies as a function of illumination and acceleration. The following basic findings resulted from an analysis of the data from this experiment: 1. At the higher levels of instrument illumination, increasing acceleration and decreasing luminance produce relatively small increase in reading errors. 2. At marginal levels of illumination, acceleration and luminance interact to produce a relatively large increase in error. 3. Intensity of illumination can compensate for the decline in visual performance at stress levels above 1 g.

Tests devised and conducted by the Psychology Department of the University of New Mexico to obtain data on the frequency of occurrence of errors in reading and setting multiple-turn dials of five different designs are described. Analysis of the data obtained from the tests lead to the conclusion that dial design has marked effect on speed and accuracy with which the dials may be set and read. The design of Dial 5 is recommended for use under the specifications for this study. The set-check system used in the experiments is found to have an error probability of 0.0015 for this dial. A double-set system, in which two persons set two automatically interlocked dials, is suggested and it is predicted that this system would reduce the probability of error for Dial 5 to the order of 0.00003.

This report describes experiments which measured performance in flying a Link Treatment Trainer as a function of the brightness and color of the illumination provided. Subjects (9 in Experiment I, 12 in Experiment II, and 4 in Experiment III) flew modified "Charley" courses in a task that was almost entirely visual. Performance was measured in terms of deviations from the calculated perfect course in altitude, compass heading, air speed, and vertical speed. In Experiment I task brightnesses of 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 foot-lamberts were employed, using white (Mazda) light. In Experiment II three colors of illumination were used (red, orange-red, and orange-yellow) each at 0.01 and 0.1 foot-lamberts. In Experiment III subjects flew continuous four-hour sessions with data recorded during the first and fourth hours of each session. White and orange-red illumination was used, each at 0.01 and 0.1 foot-lamberts.
