In On Leadership, John Gardner wrote, “Most of what leaders have that enables them to lead is learned.” Effective leadership skills can be learned and become habits. In Primal Leadership, Daniel Goleman wrote, “Not only can emotional intelligence be learned, but it also can be retained over the long term.” Southern Baptist congregants expect their pastors to be theologians, but also effective leaders. The emotional quotient barrier suggests that pastoral leadership is less effective because of behaviors such as inconsistent management of emotions, inability to genuinely connect with people, or leading without inspiration. This has led to stagnated or declining ministries, shorter tenures in a single ministry, leader burnout, and premature resignations. Utilizing case studies, church leader interviews, and surveys, this project will evaluate the leadership style and emotional intelligence of traditional, attractional, organic, and hybrid church leaders. It will detail the emergence of emotional intelligence in church leadership, determine reasons for and the risks of underdeveloped emotional intelligence, and introduce a model for developing and cultivating healthy habits for effective church leadership through emotional intelligence.

There are many things that make up a great leader. The ability to motivate, to see the big picture, to delegate. But perhaps just as important, if not more so, is the leader's emotional intelligence (EQ). How we feel impacts how we lead, and how those we lead feel about themselves when they're around us affects how well they follow our leadership. It follows then that if we want to be the most effective leaders, we must be emotionally mature. In this practical book, church leadership expert Aubrey Malphurs shows church and ministry leaders how to assess, understand, and improve both their own EQ and that of their followers, so that they can inspire the very best in their churches and organizations.

In this explanatory sequential mixed methods research design, the researcher examined the impact of emotional intelligence on volunteer church leadership teams. Leaders from thirty-three churches from the upper mid-west that adhere to a congregational form of governance were surveyed using the Five Dysfunctions of a Team Assessment, the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF) assessments. Three district superintendents and a denominational president were interviewed using validated semi-structured interview questions. Using one-way ANOVAs, Person r Correlation Coefficients, and multiple regression analysis, conclusions show that there was a positive significant relationship between levels of Emotional Intelligence and team functioning scores. Findings indicated that emotional intelligence contributes significantly to healthy and positive relationships on elder boards.

Effective ministerial leadership requires more than outstanding preaching or excellent biblical exegesis. Pastors need to be aware of and manage their own emotions as well as possess relationship management skills. However, most pastors lack the training needed for developing emotionally intelligent leadership skills. These deficits can result in unresolved stress and blind spots that can easily provoke negative responses and actions in ministry. In addition, a lack of sensitivity to the emotions of others can also damage the ecclesiastical unity of the body of Christ. A lack of emotional intelligence contributed to the development of long-standing divisions in the Hong Kong Assemblies of God. Since the 1990s, church leaders have lacked unity and healthy support systems. To address these problems, a restructuring process for the Fellowship began in 2014, with the goal of having a new network in place by 2021. To successfully build this new network, however, ministers needed training in developing emotional intelligence. This project provided a two-day workshop to train Assemblies of God Hong Kong Network’s ministers to develop emotionally intelligent leadership skills. The workshop offered participants fundamental instruction in the principles of emotional intelligence. They also learned specific strategies for implementing EQ principles into their own ministry context, which will assist them in becoming more emotionally intelligent leaders who can foster emotionally intelligent ministry environments.

EI establishes a grid for gonig beyond the cognitive skills typically included in ministerial training to incorporate self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management as additional competiencies essential to the preparaton of the minister. SL fits into the social awareness and relationship management side of EI assisting pastors in understanding the context of the local church. The four primary biblical metaphors of the church--the body of Christ, the family of God, the household of faith, and the army of the Lord--provide a framework for understanding how individual church members develop through supportive and directive leadership skills.
