A challenging task for educators around the United States is improving family involvement and communication between home and school. Particularly among English learners, teachers require specific methods to communicate effectively with this diverse group of parents. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to identify methods to increase communication and involvement for parents of English learners (ELs) in the X Public School District. This study is critical because teachers are having a difficult time communicating with families of English learners regarding their child's progress and involving these families in school and classroom events. With this quantitative research design, teachers were able to complete a survey regarding the current methods of home-school communication and family involvement that they have found to be successful for ELs and their parents. The results of the surveys were analyzed and summarized. The survey included multiple choice questions, rating scale questions, and Likert-type scale questions to measure the current methods of home-school communication and family involvement that teachers of ELs in kindergarten through fourth grade are using and have found to be effective. With the EL population proliferating each year, it is imperative that educators determine effective ways to communicate with this unique group of learners and improve the collaboration among families and schools to ensure the academic, social, and emotional success of students.

Communicating effectively with parents and the wider community is important to schools for a number of reasons. Community members are more supportive of schools that they feel they understand, and the significant role parents play in their children's education can only be affected by the schools if effective communication exists. Four methods of communication are especially useful with groups of parents: newsletters, open houses, handbooks, and parent organizations. Communicating with parents individually may involve parent-teacher conferences, home visits, interviews, and phone calls or letters. Efforts to inform parents should be continued through their children's secondary school years because parental interest remains high even though their active participation is often reduced. Effective use of the kinds of communication covered here can serve as a starting point for broader school-community relations efforts. These efforts include soliciting citizen involvement as volunteers in the schools and developing partnerships with community businesses. Resource materials providing useful information on various aspects of school-community relations are cited throughout this publication. (PGD)

The Knowledge Gap written by Natalie Wexler and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-04 with Education categories.

The untold story of the root cause of America's education crisis--and the seemingly endless cycle of multigenerational poverty. It was only after years within the education reform movement that Natalie Wexler stumbled across a hidden explanation for our country's frustrating lack of progress when it comes to providing every child with a quality education. The problem wasn't one of the usual scapegoats: lazy teachers, shoddy facilities, lack of accountability. It was something no one was talking about: the elementary school curriculum's intense focus on decontextualized reading comprehension "skills" at the expense of actual knowledge. In the tradition of Dale Russakoff's The Prize and Dana Goldstein's The Teacher Wars, Wexler brings together history, research, and compelling characters to pull back the curtain on this fundamental flaw in our education system--one that fellow reformers, journalists, and policymakers have long overlooked, and of which the general public, including many parents, remains unaware. But The Knowledge Gap isn't just a story of what schools have gotten so wrong--it also follows innovative educators who are in the process of shedding their deeply ingrained habits, and describes the rewards that have come along: students who are not only excited to learn but are also acquiring the knowledge and vocabulary that will enable them to succeed. If we truly want to fix our education system and unlock the potential of our neediest children, we have no choice but to pay attention.
