The purpose was to determine whether an alert to get up and move once per hour, while at work would reduce sedentary time, change the number of sit-to-stand transitions and change perceived wellness. A secondary purpose was to determine whether subjective recall of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time were related to objective measures. Participants were office staff and admininstrators working in occupations primarily consisting of sitting at a desk. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the control - control group (CC), or the control - intervention group (CI).Both groups wore a triaxial accelerometer for two weeks. The CC group was instructed to maintain normal behaviors, whereas the CI group was instructed to maintain behaviors during week 1, but responded to the alerts during week two, The alert was an hourly reminder on their phone or computer to get up and move for a short duration in the workday. Both groups provided subjective recall and objective measures of sedentary and PA behaviors at the end of week one and week two. Both groups completed a perceived wellness survey at the beginning of the study, and again after weeks one and two. A factorial/mixed design repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed no differences in any of the variables over time. There was a between groups difference, and a post hoc independent t-test revealed that sedentary time at work was different between groups in week 2. Perceived wellness was not different between groups at day 0, day 8, or day 16, nor was it different between groups between day 0 and day 8. However, there was a significant increase in perceived wellness from day 0 to day 16 ion both groups. A positive, weak correlation was found between subjective and objective sedentary time at work. There was also a positive, weak correlation between subjective and objective sedentary time over a 24 hour period. It was concluded that the intervention had no effect on sitting time or sit-to-stand transitions during working hours or sedentarytime outside of work. Perceived wellness scores over the two week protocol improved for both groups. Subjective recall was only weakly related to objective measures of sedentary time.

Over the past few decades, a primary focus has been on the negative health effects of not participating in regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MPVA). Only recently has sedentary behavior been studied as a distinct and independent risk factor for adverse health outcomes. This dissertation sought to provide new insights into sedentary behavior in desk-dependent office workers. The purpose of the first study was to assess correlates of sedentary behavior in office workers. Cross-sectional analysis of data from the Recharge@Work Study was used to assess behavioral, social, and organizational correlates of objectively measured sedentary time in desk-dependent office workers at two hospitals located in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area. Respondents were recruited from desk-dependent administration hospital workers. Analysis included 70 adults (~49.2 years old), with three behavioral, three social and one organizational variable assessed by, computerized questionnaires. Sedentary activity assessed by accelerometry and expressed as prolonged sedentary bouts (60 minute blocks ≤ 150 counts per minute [cpm]). No significant associations were found between age, gender, BMI, outcome expectancy, or self-efficacy and sedentary behavior. In individuals with low perceived senior management support, direct supervisor support and enjoyment were strongly associated with prolonged sedentary behavior (OR=13.6, OR=16.3 respectively). Individuals with high perceived senior management support showed no association between enjoyment and management support and sedentary behavior. In individuals with low direct supervisor support, enjoyment was significantly associated with prolonged sedentary behavior (OR=12.2), but not associated with individuals with high direct supervisor support. The results from this study suggest manager support and enjoyment may be important targets for developing effective intervention strategies to reduce sedentary behavior in office workers. The purpose of the second study was to assess the efficacy of a theory-based behavior intervention to incorporate active breaks into the workday of office workers. Desk-dependent office workers exhibit high levels of prolonged sedentary behavior, and theory-based interventions to break up sedentary time within this population are needed. The study examined the effectiveness of Recharge@Work: a 12-week, theory-based intervention to decrease overall sedentary time and prolonged (>60min) sedentary time during the workday in desk-dependent hospital administrative staff. Two hospitals were matched with one serving as the comparison site (N=26) and the other serving as the intervention site (N=39). The intervention consisted of personalized feedback on sedentary behavior and individual toolkits. Toolkits included items to improve self-regulation in taking short 2-3 minute active breaks every 60 minutes (timers, activity log, activity examples). Data were collected at baseline, mid-intervention (6wk) and end-intervention (12wk). The present study examined data collected from a randomized-control trial (RCT) of workplace wellness prevention programs. Data were collected from the Act Healthy program, a group workplace wellness intervention adapted from the Stanford Patient Education Research Center Self-Management programs, and Eye on Health, an individual control intervention based upon a standard disease management model. Path analysis was used to assess for moderation of health outcomes (physical activity and perceived health status) across groups. Measures of self-efficacy, depression, and interpersonal relationships were proposed moderator variables, and it was predicted that participants low in self-efficacy, high in depression, or low in interpersonal relationships would benefit more from the Act Healthy group self-management intervention. Results showed no significant effects for five of the six predicted interactions; the interaction effect for interpersonal relationships on perceived health status was significant and was found in the predicted direction. Follow up simple-slope analyses, however, were non-significant. These results suggest that self-efficacy, depression, and interpersonal relationships failed to significantly moderate the relationship between intervention condition and health outcome. Limitations of this research include the high-functioning nature of the sample: respondents, on average, reported high general sense of self-efficacy, low depression, and high perceived social support. The restricted range of these variables of interest may have impacted the ability of analyses to detect interaction effects. Future directions for research include examining gender as a variable of interest as well as assessing for interaction effects in a lower functioning population sample.
