In this thesis three new transfer operator based approaches are developed for the analysis of the long-term behavior of dynamical systems. First, a sparse grid discretization is derived in order to deal with the "curse of dimension". The second method considers the infinitesimal generator of the transfer operator semigroup for continuous-time systems. The third method uses mean field theory to describe the dynamics of subsystems; here the main attention is devoted to conformation analysis in molecular dynamics. Further, conditions are derived such that the Galerkin projection of the transfer operator can be related to a small random perturbation of the underlying system.

This book presents insights from the IUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Dynamics for Design of Mechanical Systems Across Different Length/Time Scales. It covers a diverse array of topics, including applications of parametric amplification and self-excitation, as well as the design and analysis of devices and systems that harness geometric and material nonlinearities. The book features chapters on nonlinear energy transfer, eigenfrequency detection through subharmonic and superharmonic resonances, and the innovative use of nonlinear mode localization. The authors explore dynamic stabilization under high-frequency excitation, the utilization of multimode interactions and nonlinear normal modes, and the application of nonlinear resonance and bifurcation in creating ultrasensitive sensors and high-performance actuators. This book provides a comprehensive record of the symposium's discussions, representing a collective effort to expand our understanding of nonlinear phenomena and its potential to reshape the landscape of mechanical system design.

Perturbation theory and in particular normal form theory has shown strong growth during the last decades. So it is not surprising that the authors have presented an extensive revision of the first edition of the Averaging Methods in Nonlinear Dynamical Systems book. There are many changes, corrections and updates in chapters on Basic Material and Asymptotics, Averaging, and Attraction. Chapters on Periodic Averaging and Hyperbolicity, Classical (first level) Normal Form Theory, Nilpotent (classical) Normal Form, and Higher Level Normal Form Theory are entirely new and represent new insights in averaging, in particular its relation with dynamical systems and the theory of normal forms. Also new are surveys on invariant manifolds in Appendix C and averaging for PDEs in Appendix E. Since the first edition, the book has expanded in length and the third author, James Murdock has been added. Review of First Edition "One of the most striking features of the book is the nice collection of examples, which range from the very simple to some that are elaborate, realistic, and of considerable practical importance. Most of them are presented in careful detail and are illustrated with profuse, illuminating diagrams." - Mathematical Reviews

This book summarizes and highlights progress in our understanding of Dy namical Systems during six years of the German Priority Research Program "Ergodic Theory, Analysis, and Efficient Simulation of Dynamical Systems" . The program was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and aimed at combining, focussing, and enhancing research efforts of active groups in the field by cooperation on a federal level. The surveys in the book are addressed to experts and non-experts in the mathematical community alike. In addition they intend to convey the significance of the results for applications far into the neighboring disciplines of Science. Three fundamental topics in Dynamical Systems are at the core of our research effort: behavior for large time dimension measure, and chaos Each of these topics is, of course, a highly complex problem area in itself and does not fit naturally into the deplorably traditional confines of any of the disciplines of ergodic theory, analysis, or numerical analysis alone. The necessity of mathematical cooperation between these three disciplines is quite obvious when facing the formidahle task of establishing a bidirectional transfer which bridges the gap between deep, detailed theoretical insight and relevant, specific applications. Both analysis and numerical analysis playa key role when it comes to huilding that bridge. Some steps of our joint bridging efforts are collected in this volume. Neither our approach nor the presentations in this volume are monolithic.

Mathematical models are used to simulate, and sometimes control, the behavior of physical and artificial processes such as the weather and very large-scale integration (VLSI) circuits. The increasing need for accuracy has led to the development of highly complex models. However, in the presence of limited computational accuracy and storage capabilities model reduction (system approximation) is often necessary. Approximation of Large-Scale Dynamical Systems provides a comprehensive picture of model reduction, combining system theory with numerical linear algebra and computational considerations. It addresses the issue of model reduction and the resulting trade-offs between accuracy and complexity. Special attention is given to numerical aspects, simulation questions, and practical applications.

In response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), and given the increased activities of the offshore oil industry, an international multidisciplinary consortium - the CIGOM Consortium - was funded by Mexico's Energy Secretariat (SENER) and its National Council for Science and Technology (CONACyT). Spanning 2015-2022, CIGOM's goals were to establish an environmental baseline to characterize the southern GOM’s natural variability and contribute to the understanding of ecosystem function, use cutting-edge technologies to observe the ocean, couple physical circulation and biogeochemical models to gain understating of oceanographic processes, generate oil spill scenarios using model ensembles and statistical techniques and conducting vulnerability assessments. Over 300 researchers participated in the CIGOM consortium's efforts.

This book covers the latest ideas and approaches in strongly nonlinear dynamical and acoustical systems and discusses appropriate modelling tools and practical examples highlighting the non-standard and non-stationary aspects of this challenging, yet so promising area. The contributions investigate and present the intentional use of nonlinearity in the most challenging field of acoustics, the latest developments in transient dynamics of strongly nonlinear systems, the subtle numeric problems arising while exploring nonlinear normal modes, the fascinating topic of nonlinear dynamics of wind musical instruments, the novel developments in the field of global nonlinear dynamics, some multi-faceted mathematical challenges in the dynamics of hysteretic systems, and lastly offers theoretical, numeric and experimental insights into the intricate dynamics of systems with contact nonlinearities. The need for such a work is underscored by the fact that accounting for, understanding of, and designing with nonlinearities is becoming an emerging universal trend in engineering practice, and is predicted to be even more so in the future. The book demonstrates that the idea of exploiting strong nonlinearity in dynamical and acoustical systems has transitioned from few early theoretical works to a diverse theoretical and experimental body of current research.
