Dieses Buch zeigt am Beispiel der griechischen Antike auf, dass die Gefühle, die wir gemeinhin mit Ehre und Rache verbinden, durch das antike Recht überhaupt erst geschaffen wurden. Es leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zu einer politischen Theorie der Wirksamkeit des Rechts und fügt der Gewaltgeschichte des Menschen in der frühgriechischen Antike eine unerwartete Wendung hinzu.

There was a time when this small dialogue was held in high regard and enjoyed much authority.2 The Alcibiades Major was unreservedly attributed to Plato. It was much read, quoted and alluded to. And it is no exaggeration to say that it was one of the key works of the corpus platonicum. The contrast with the present could hardly be more striking.

Die Prozesse aber sind für die, denen Unrecht angetan wurde, gefährlicher als für diejenigen, die gesetzwidrig fremde Frauen schänden." (Lys. 1, 49.) Mit diesen Worten verteidigt sich Euphiletos innerhalb der von Lysias überlieferten Rede im Mordfall Eratosthenes. Euphiletos wird beschuldigt, den Ehebrecher Eratosthenes in eine Falle gelockt zu haben, als er ihn in flagranti mit seiner Ehefrau in seinem Anwesen ertappte und tötete. Es wird zu untersuchen sein, inwieweit Euphiletos nach den Gesetzen im klassischen Athen für diese Tat zu belangen ist oder ob sein Verhalten den Rechtsgrundsätzen entspricht und damit als straffrei zu bewerten ist. Da bei einem Ehebruch die Ehre sowie die sexuelle Integrität des Ehemanns befleckt wurden, ist es zuvor notwendig, die Konzeption von Ehre und Rache im antiken Griechenland darzustellen. Dabei werden einige Charakteristika erläutert, mit denen diese Konzeption und die Wechselwirkung von Ehre und Rache nachvollzogen werden kann.

By the early middle ages vernacular aristocratic traditions of heroic narration were firmly established in Western and Northern Europe. Although there are regional, linguistic and formal differences, one can observe a number of similarities. Oral literature disseminates a range of themes that are shared by narratives in most parts of the continent. In all the European regions, this tradition of heroic narration came into contact with Christianity, which led to modifications. Similar processes of adaptation and transformation can be traced everywhere in this field of early European vernacular narrative. But with the increasing specialization of academic fields over the last half century, inter-disciplinary dialogue has become increasingly difficult. The volume is a contribution to renew the inter-disciplinary dialogue about common themes, topics and motifs in Nordic, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Germanic literature, and about the different methodologies to explore them.

Germania Semitica explores prehistoric language contact in general, and attempts to identify the languages involved in shaping Germanic in particular. The book deals with a topic outside the scope of other disciplines concerned with prehistory, such as archaeology and genetics, drawing its conclusions from the linguistic evidence alone, relying on language typology and areal probability. The data for reconstruction comes from Germanic syntax, phonology, etymology, religious loan names, and the writing system, more precisely from word order, syntactic constructions, word formation, irregularities in phonological form, lexical peculiarities, and the structure and rules of the Germanic runic alphabet. It is demonstrated that common descent is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for reconstruction. Instead, lexical and structural parallels between Germanic and Semitic languages are explored and interpreted in the framework of modern language contact theory.
