Excerpt from Eighteen Years in Uganda and East Africa The exhaustion of the larger edition of this work has led to the issue of the present volume. A postscript has been added, bringing the story up to date, and passages of less permanent interest have been excised. The book, however, as a record of Missionary work is practically the same as the earlier edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Eighteen Years in Uganda and East Africa Although this work touches, not infrequently, upon events having to do with the political, material, and spiritual history, advancement, and development of Uganda and East Africa, it does not profess to be a complete record of them. It is simply a story of Episcopal Missionary life and work in Equatorial Africa. It has been put together in the midst of many distractions - distractions inseparable from the conditions of a life such as that which it has been my lot to live in the wilds of Central Africa during the past eighteen years. I trust that this may be held sufficient to excuse the rough, and I fear often disjointed, way in which my narrative is presented to the reader. I acknowledge with gratitude the help which I have received from the study of the publications of the Church Missionary Society - that society to which Uganda owes so much; the works of the Rev. R. P. Ashe, "Two Kings of Uganda" and "Chronicles of Uganda"; Mrs. Harrison's "Mackay of Uganda," and that very interesting work by Ham Mukasa, "Uganda's Katikiro in England." My warmest thanks are also due to the Rev. E. Millar for much valuable assistance gladly rendered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Sage Handbook Of Geographical Knowledge written by John A Agnew and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-17 with Science categories.

A refreshingly innovative approach to charting geographical knowledge. A wide range of authors trace the social construction and contestation of geographical ideas through the sites of their production and their relational geographies of engagement. This creative and comprehensive book offers an extremely valuable tool to professionals and students alike. - Victoria Lawson, University of Washington "A Handbook that recasts geograph′s history in original, thought-provoking ways. Eschewing the usual chronological march through leading figures and big ideas, it looks at geography against the backdrop of the places and institutional contexts where it has been produced, and the social-cum-intellectual currents underlying some of its most important concepts." - Alexander B. Murphy, University of Oregon The SAGE Handbook of Geographical Knowledge is a critical inquiry into how geography as a field of knowledge has been produced, re-produced, and re-imagined. It comprises three sections on geographical orientations, geography′s venues, and critical geographical concepts and controversies. The first provides an overview of the genealogy of "geography". The second highlights the types of spatial settings and locations in which geographical knowledge has been produced. The third focuses on venues of primary importance in the historical geography of geographical thought. Orientations includes chapters on: Geography - the Genealogy of a Term; Geography′s Narratives and Intellectual History Geography′s Venues includes chapters on: Field; Laboratory; Observatory; Archive; Centre of Calculation; Mission Station; Battlefield; Museum; Public Sphere; Subaltern Space; Financial Space; Art Studio; Botanical/Zoological Gardens; Learned Societies Critical concepts and controversies - includes chapters on: Environmental Determinism; Region; Place; Nature and Culture; Development; Conservation; Geopolitics; Landscape; Time; Cycle of Erosion; Time; Gender; Race/Ethnicity; Social Class; Spatial Analysis; Glaciation; Ice Ages; Map; Climate Change; Urban/Rural. Comprehensive without claiming to be encyclopedic, textured and nuanced, this Handbook will be a key resource for all researchers with an interest in the pasts, presents and futures of geography.

Excerpt from East Africa and Uganda: Or Our Last Land Books written with avowed objects are rarely successful, but my purpose is so modest and unassuming that I anticipate with confidence some degree of success. Here is a country where many thousands have in constant sight of starvation, where land is the playground of the rich, hundreds of thousands of acres devoted to what is called sport, where the poor can never hope to make a home. There is a country with fertile land quite valueless for lack of population, capable of supporting hundreds of thousands in comfort and such affluence as comes from contentment; a country full of magnificent possibilities and on which we have expended many millions of money and many valuable lives. Our Government have seriously offered to devote a large territory of this magnificent country to a syndicate for the purpose of establishing "an alien autonomous settlement," and in doing so can never have realised the evil result which must arise from such a policy. By all means do not let us act the part of a Dog in the Manger and do not let us refuse admittance and even help to those of other race than ourselves.
