This book contributes to the literary history of eighteenth-century women’s life writings, particularly those labeled “scandalous memoirs.” It examines how the evolution of this subgenre was shaped partially by several innovative memoirs that have received only modest critical attention. Breashears argues that Madame de La Touche’s Apologie and her friend Lady Vane’s Memoirs contributed to the crystallization of this sub-genre at mid-century, and that Lady Vane’s collaboration with Tobias Smollett in The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle resulted in a brilliant experiment in the relationship between gender and genre. It demonstrates that the Memoirs of Catherine Jemmat incorporated influential new strategies for self-justification in response to changing kinship priorities, and that Margaret Coghlan’s Memoirs introduced revolutionary themes that created a hybrid: the political scandalous memoir. This book will therefore appeal to scholars interested in life writing, women’s history, genre theory, and eighteenth-century British literature.

Eighteenth-century literature displays a fascination with the seduction of a virtuous young heroine, most famously illustrated by Samuel Richardson's Clarissa and repeated in 1790s radical women's novels, in the many memoirs by fictional or real penitent prostitutes, and in street print. Across fiction, ballads, essays and miscellanies, stories were told of women's mistaken belief in their lovers' vows. In this book Katherine Binhammer surveys seduction narratives from the late eighteenth century within the context of the new ideal of marriage-for-love and shows how these tales tell varying stories of women's emotional and sexual lives. Drawing on new historicism, feminism, and narrative theory, Binhammer argues that the seduction narrative allowed writers to explore different fates for the heroine than the domesticity that became the dominant form in later literature. An Open Access edition is available. The Visual Worlds of Life Writing brings into conversation the two most popular genres in long-eighteenth-century England: portraits and biographies. As key instruments of social formation when Britain was “forging the nation” (Linda Colley), they were wielded alike by Whigs and Tories, the aristocracy and the commercial middle-classes, high-class artists and grub-street writers. They were most persuasive, however, when used jointly: portrait prints, ideally accompanied by ‘Brief Lives’, sold by the thousands. National histories were re-issued to include pictures. Portraitists were required to stage their sitters as though taken from real-life situations. Embedded into such interplay between texts and images was an aesthetic claim: doing biography was a multimedia enterprise. Far from being just words on a page, eighteenth-century life writing came with frontispiece portraits, illustrations, or elaborate title pages. Biographers directed their readers to existing portraits of their subjects to enhance the reading experience. Portraits made of calligraphic writing blurred the boundaries between text and image. As a thorough reassessment of visual culture’s role in producing biographies, this book offers an in-depth analysis of the rhetorics of portraiture and life writing, an historical account of their sister arts tradition, and an inquiry into the social function of profiling people.
