Aristocratic Redoubt: The Austro-Hungarian Foreign Office on the Eve of the First World War is a study of the nobility who served in the foreign office prior to World War I. Following the lead of historians who are reexamining pre-industrial elites in England and Germany, Godsey deals with such facets of aristocratic life as education, wealth, religion, and ethnicity. Hinter dem wenig auffälligen Namen Karl Friedrich Nowak verbirgt sich eine interessante Persönlichkeit. Geboren 1882 in Wien, arbeitete er zunächst als Kulturredakteur. Im Ersten Weltkrieg profilierte er sich als Kriegsberichterstatter, schrieb historische Darstellungen und widmete sich später höchst erfolgreich seinem «Verlag für Kulturpolitik». Unbestritten ist sein Naheverhältnis zum Generalstabschef der k. u. k. Armee, Conrad von Hötzendorf; belegt durch eine stattliche Korrespondenz, welche sich im Nachlass Nowaks im Österreichischen Staatsarchiv befindet. Den Mittelpunkt der Arbeit bildet die Untersuchung der historischen Werke Nowaks, welche sich mit FML Conrad und den Kriegsereignissen befassen.
