Die zentrale Einsicht dieses Buches ist, daß es sich bei der aktuellen Krise im Grunde um eine Krise des Verstehens handelt. Die besteht nicht allein in einem Mangel an wirklich maßgebenden Gedanken, sondern - bei allem Wettlauf um Innovationen und allem Hochfrequenzhandel – auch in der Ausbreitung einer Art mentaler Sklerose: das heutige Weltverständnis richtet sich immer stärker in leblosen Modellen ein und läuft so Gefahr, seine Wirklichkeitskompetenz einzubüssen. Eine Kritik am Modelldenken aber kann sich nicht selber wiederum an Modelle halten. Wie entscheidend es dabei um das Verstehen unserer heutigen Welt geht, belegt die Tatsache, daß die Globalisierung sich nicht ohne das Modelldenken ausbreiten kann. Selbst wenn jeder die Dynamik der Globalisierung mehr oder weniger stark zu spüren bekommt, muß das nicht heißen, daß sie dabei auch schon angemessen verstanden würde, dringlicher scheint es, sich auf sie einzustellen. So gibt es ein unausgesprochenes und uneingelöstes Bedürfnis nach einer kritisch fundierten und d. h. auch modellfreien Auseinandersetzung über die Globalisierung und ihre Macht. Um aus dieser übergangenen Sprachlosigkeit herauszufinden, ist es nötig, das in Wirtschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft vorherrschende Denken in seinen unbefragten Voraussetzungen und historischen Wurzeln zu ergründen. Gleichwohl verfolgt dieses Buch keinen rein akademischen Ansatz, der auf ein spezialisiertes Vorwissen baut; die Art zu denken und die Sicht und Wahrnehmung sind dennoch nicht die selben wie sonst im Alltag. Die leitende Frage dieser engagiert nüchternen Erörterung der Globalisierung war und ist: Was müssen wir von unserer Geschichte wissen, um durch sie soviel von unserer Gegenwart zu begreifen, daß sich freie Ausblicke für unsere Zukunft eröffnen?

Die schon seit einigen Jahren beobachtbare erfreuliche Tendenz, daB die Jahrestagungen der Deutschen Gesellschaft fOr Operations Research zunehmend von allen Interessentengruppen . der Unternehmensforschung innerhalb sowie auBerhalb der Gesellschaft als willkommenes Forum fOr einen breiten, dabei aber zugleich auch intensiven wissenschaftlichen Meinungs- und Erfahrungsaustausch genutzt werden, hat sich auf der 9. Jahrestagung, die vom 24. bis 26. September 1980 in den Raumen der Universitat Essen durchgefOhrt wurde, fortgesetzt und weiter verstarkt. Dies zeigt sich allein schon dadurch, daB auf dieser von Ober 400 Teilnehmern besuchten 9. Jahrestagung 135 Vortrage gehalten wurden. Hinzu kamen der Eroffnungs-und der Plenarvortrag, die Hohepunkte der Tagung darstellten und fOr die ein auf nationaler Ebene renommierter Praktiker sowie ein international angesehener Wissenschaftler des Opera tions Research gewonnen werden konnten. Der hiermit vorgelegte Pro ceedings-Band, der erstmals!1" Springer-Verlag erscheint, gibt einen Oberblick Ober das wissenschaftliche Programm dieser 9. Jahrestagung. Bei der Vielzahl der eingegangenen Vortragsanmeldungen konnte - wie auch schon in den beiden Jahren zuvor - durch die Einordnung der Beitrage in 26 Sektionen eine fruchtbare Fachdiskussion zwischen Vertre tern der Hochschule und der Praxis auf den unterschiedlichen Teildiszipli nen des Operations Research ermoglicht werden. Im vorliegenden Band ist eine Reihe von Aufsätzen zusam mengefasst, in denen Alfred Schütz sich bei der Behandlung ver schiedener Fragen immer wieder einem der wichtigsten philoso phischen Probleme zuwendet: dem Problem der Sozialität. Der Grossteil dieser Aufsätze ist bereits anderenorts erschienen: doch sind sie weit verstreut und oft schwer zugänglich. Alfred Schütz hatte Maurice Natanson, seinen Schüler und Freund, als Heraus geber der zahlreichen Schriften, die seit seiner Ankunft in den Vereinigten Staaten Anfang des 2. Weltkriegs entstanden sind, vorgesehen. Er konnte die Verwirklichung dieses Vorhabens nicht mehr miterleben. Die Herausgabe seiner Schriften, die wir mit diesem Band in getreuer Befolgung seiner Anweisungen beginnen, soll einen Denker, dem wir freundschaftlich verbunden waren, in angemessener Weise ehren und dazu beitragen, seine hervor ragende Bedeutung für die Phänomenologie herauszustellen - eine Bedeutung, die auf Grund der dramatischen Umstände seines Lebens und wegen seiner grossen Bescheidenheit zu seinen Lebzeiten nicht hinreichend gewürdigt wurde. Ich möchte hier von Schütz als Menschen sprechen und die Feinsinnigkeit seines Geistes darstellen, seine durchdringende Ironie, die Gelassenheit und seinen Mut in der Emigration, den weiten Bereich seiner Interessen, seine jugendhafte Begeisterung und das Einfühlungsvermögen, das ihn befähigte, sich noch im Alter von 40 Jahren in eine neue Kulturwelt einzuleben - und sich in ihr auszuzeichnen. This series of HANDBOOKS OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE is designed to illuminate a field which not only includes general linguistics and the study of linguistics as applied to specific languages, but also covers those more recent areas which have developed from the increasing body of research into the manifold forms of communicative action and interaction. For "classic" linguistics there appears to be a need for a review of the state of the art which will provide a reference base for the rapid advances in research undertaken from a variety of theoretical standpoints, while in the more recent branches of communication science the handbooks will give researchers both an overview and orientation. To attain these objectives, the series aims for a standard comparable to that of the leading handbooks in other disciplines, and to this end strives for comprehensiveness, theoretical explicitness, reliable documentation of data and findings, and up-to-date methodology. The editors, both of the series and of the individual volumes, and the individual contributors, are committed to this aim. The language of publication is English. The main aim of the series is to provide an appropriate account of the state of the art in the various areas of linguistics and communication science covered by each of the various handbooks; however no inflexible pre-set limits will is imposed on the scope of each volume. The series is open-ended, and can thus take account of further developments in the field. This conception, coupled with the necessity of allowing adequate time for each volume to be prepared with the necessary care, means that there is no set time-table for the publication of the whole series. Each volume is a self-contained work, complete in itself. The order in which the handbooks are published does not imply any rank ordering, but is determined by the way in which the series is organized; the editors of the whole series enlist a competent editor for each individual volume. Once the principal editor for a volume has been found, he or she then has a completely free hand in the choice of co-editors and contributors. The editors plan each volume independently of the others, being governed only by general formal principles. The series editors only intervene where questions of delineation between individual volumes are concerned. It is felt that this (modus operandi) is best suited to achieving the objectives of the series, namely to give a competent account of the present state of knowledge and of the perception of the problems in the area covered by each volume.
