The author focuses both on Endlicher's biography and his different scientific studies and the meaning of his works in the areas of botany and sinology. He played an important role in the foundation of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna in 1847. The author also deals with his role in the Revolution of 1848 and the different rumours surrounding his death. The core of the book is the text critical edition of the complete correspondence with scholars and artists of his time, kept in the Natural History Museum Vienna, including more than 460 letters from 93 people. The volume gives an insight in the cultural-historical and political situation surrounding Endlicher in the first half of the 19th century.

Dieser Band vereinigt Briefe von und an Stanislas Julien (1797-1873), einen der bedeutendsten Kenner der chinesischen Sprache und Literatur. Er begann seine Laufbahn als Graecist, wurde dann zufällig auf das Chinesische aufmerksam, fing Feuer und wurde bereits acht Jahre später Nachfolger seines Lehrers Rémusat als Professor am Collège de France und Mitglied des Institut de France. Er übersetzte klassische Singspiele der Mongolenzeit, traditionelle Romane, lieferte die erste verlässliche Übersetzung von Laozis Daodejing, aber auch von Reiseberichten buddhistischer Mönche aus dem 6.-7. Jahrhundert - schließlich übertrug er auch ein Werk über die kaiserliche Porzellanmanufaktur, ein anderes über Seidengewinnung, und überdies buddhistische Märchen und Fabeln, die wertvolles Material zum Studium der Wanderung von Motiven nach Europe lieferten. Diese vielfältigen Aktivitäten spiegeln sich in seinem Briefwechsel, von dem sein Gedankenaustauch mit dem Ingenieur und Bibliophilen Paul Schilling von Canstadt (1786-1837), dem Berliner Orientalisten Julius Klaproth (1782-1835), dem Botaniker und Sinologen Stephan Endlicher (1804-1849), dem altenburgischen Politiker und Linguisten Hans Conon von der Gabelentz (1807-1874) und dem Naturforscher Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) wiedergegeben sind. Insgesamt ergeben sich vielfältige Facetten, die sich zu einem Bild runden: Mit Schilling ging es um chinesische Bücher und ihre Beschaffung aus China, mit Klaproth um die laufenden Arbeiten und Pläne in Paris, mit Endlicher um chinesische Grammatik und Fragen der chinesischen Geographie und Kartographie, mit Gabelentz um die mandschurische Literatur und mit Humboldt um Information über Vulkane in Zentralasien. The Organizational Complex is a historical and theoretical analysis of corporate architecture in the United States after the Second World War. Its title refers to the aesthetic and technological extension of the military-industrial complex, in which architecture, computers, and corporations formed a network of objects, images, and discourses that realigned social relations and transformed the postwar landscape. In-depth case studies of architect Eero Saarinen's work for General Motors, IBM, and Bell Laboratories and analyses of office buildings designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill trace the emergence of a systems-based model of organization in architecture, in which the modular curtain wall acts as both an organizational device and a carrier of the corporate image. Such an image—of the corporation as a flexible, integrated system—is seen to correspond with a "humanization" of corporate life, as corporations decentralize both spatially and administratively. Parallel analyses follow the assimilation of cybernetics into aesthetics in the writings of artist and visual theorist Gyorgy Kepes, as art merges with techno-science in the service of a dynamic new "pattern-seeing." Image and system thus converge in the organizational complex, while top-down power dissolves into networked, pattern-based control. Architecture, as one among many media technologies, supplies the patterns—images of organic integration designed to regulate new and unstable human-machine assemblages.

The volume focuses on emerging "rooms for manoeuvre" in the socialist societies of Central and Eastern Europe after the Second World War. Unlike in other works, these areas of activity are not viewed as isolated spheres where citizens could act independently from political and societal constraints. They are rather conceptualized here as geographical, social or institutional spaces whose existence was either outside of political control or more or less intentionally allowed by authorities and other decision-makers. The contributions investigate how East Germans, Poles, Romanians, Slovaks and Czechs coped with the limitations of socialist reality. How did they adopt and successfully adapt given norms to their own specific interests? To what extent were the resulting "rooms for manoeuvre" not only essential aspects of the state socialist system, but even necessary to stabilize it?
