Dance plays an important role in many religious traditions, in rites of passage, processions, healing rituals or festivals. But it is also controversial, especially in Christianity. Colonial European Christian discourses tend to separate dance from religion(s) and spirituality. This volume explores dance as "Third Space", following Homi Bhabha's postcolonial metaphor. The "Inter-Dance approach" combines interdisciplinary theoretical considerations with case studies. International experts examine dance controversies and discourses from the early church to World Christianity, as well as in Hasidic Judaism, Greek mysteries, Islamic Sufism, West African Togolese religions, and Afro-Brazilian Umbanda. Christian dance theologies are unfolded and the boundary-crossing potential of dance in interreligious and intercultural encounters is explored. The volume breaks new ground in how dance as ephemeral performative art, embodied thought and gendered discourse can transform studies of religion.

In popular thought, Christianity is often figured as being opposed to dance. Conventional scholarship traces this controversy back to the Middle Ages. Throughout the medieval era, the Latin Church denounced and prohibited dancing in religious and secular realms, often aligning it with demonic intervention, lust, pride, and sacrilege. Historical sources, however, suggest that medieval dance was a complex and ambivalent phenomenon. During the High and Late Middle Ages, Western theologians, liturgists, and mystics not only tolerated dance; they transformed it into a dynamic component of religious thought and practice. This book investigates how dance became a legitimate form of devotion in Christian culture. Sacred dance functioned to gloss scripture, frame spiritual experience, and imagine the afterlife. Invoking numerous manuscript and visual sources (biblical commentaries, sermons, saints' lives, ecclesiastical statutes, mystical treatises, vernacular literature, and iconography), this book highlights how medieval dance helped shape religious identity and social stratification. Moreover, this book shows the political dimension of dance, which worked in the service of Christendom, conversion, and social cohesion. In Ringleaders of Redemption, Kathryn Dickason reveals a long tradition of sacred dance in Christianity, one that the professionalization and secularization of Renaissance dance obscured, and one that the Reformation silenced and suppressed.

Jan Huizinga and Roger Caillois have already taught us to realize how important games and play have been for pre-modern civilization. Recent research has begun to acknowledge the fundamental importance of these aspects in cultural, religious, philosophical, and literary terms. This volume expands on the traditional approach still very much focused on the materiality of game (toys, cards, dice, falcons, dolls, etc.) and acknowledges that game constituted also a form of coming to terms with human existence in an unstable and volatile world determined by universal randomness and fortune. Whether considering blessings or horse fighting, falconry or card games, playing with dice or dolls, we can gain a much deeper understanding of medieval and early modern society when we consider how people pursued pleasure and how they structured their leisure time. Shiva in uns vereint die Polaritäten männlich–weiblich, Licht und Schatten. Diesem Zwischenraum von Licht und Schatten, der mehr spürbar als sichtbar ist, widmet sich der Butoh-Tanz, eine moderne japanische Strömung im Tanz, die radikal erlebt und vorgetragen wird. Dem innerlich erlebbaren Chaos folgt mit Blick auf das Spannungsfeld von Sonne, Mond und Sternen die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Fund der Himmelsscheibe von Nebra, die mit ihrer Darstellung des Firmamentes der Wissenschaft Rätsel aufgab und sich als einer der bedeutendsten archäologischen Schätze der Welt erweist. Auch im dargestellten ostnepalesischen Sakela-Tanz, der fester Bestandteil seit Jahrhunderten bewahrter religiös schamanistischer Riten ist, sind Gottesverehrung und alltägliche individuelle Handlung miteinander verflochten. Und so spricht auch er von der Sehnsucht nach leib-seelischer Hingabe des Menschen. Dies wird vergeistigt in einer ganz anderen Kultur, der Sufi-Mystik, die mit dem Drehtanz der Derwische zu besonderer Blüte gebracht wird. Auch im Christentum findet sich tatsächlich, allen Anfeindungen zum Trotz, bei aller Leibfeindlichkeit, das Motiv von "Christus als Tänzer" in den apokryphen Texten. Als Logos und Licht ist er Reigenführer des Lebens, sofern sich die Seele zum Tanz mit ihm bereithält. In enger Verbindung mit dem tanzenden Christus stehen die Totentänze, deren Kulturgeschichte über Zeugnisse aus 3500 Jahren verfügt. Der Kreis schließt sich mit den geistigen Geheimnissen der Bienen, die in ihrer tiefen, natürlichen Verbundenheit mit Himmel und Erde eine rhythmische All-Gegenwärtigkeit lehren können, wenn der Mensch seine Sinne dafür zu öffnen vermag. Eranos blickt auf eine lange Tradition zurück. Seit der Gründung 1933 stehen die Tagungen im Zeichen der Begegnung der Kulturen, aber auch des Dialoges zwischen den Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften, wobei der Psychologie und der Religionswissenschaft eine wichtige Mittlerrolle zukommt. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes setzen diesen Dialog fort.
