The theory of transference and the centrality of transference interpretation have been hallmarks of psychoanalysis since its inception. But the time has come to subject traditional theory and practice to careful, critical scrutiny in the light of contemporary science. So holds Joseph Schachter, whose Transference: Shibboleth or Albatross? undertakes this timely and thought-provoking task. After identifying the weaknesses and inconsistencies in Freud's original premises about transference, Schachter demonstrates how contemporary developmental research across a variety of domains effectively overturns any theory that posits a linear deterministic relationship between early childhood and adult psychic functioning, including the adult patient's treatment behavior toward the analyst. No less trenchantly, he shows how contemporary chaos theory complements developmental research by making the very endeavor of historical reconstruction - of backward prediction - suspect on logical grounds. Nor, Schacter continues, does the clinical evidence normally adduced in support of transference theory provide the firm bedrock of data that most analysts suppose to exist. What one finds, he holds, are endlessly reiterated claims of identifying determining historical antecedents sustained only by descriptions of current behaviors through a gloss of theory. Less a polemic than a call to order, Transference: Shibboleth or Albatross? is cogently argued and straightforwardly written. It is destined to be a thorn in the side of analysts who resist change and a spur to those who seek to bring analytic theory into closer alignment with contemporary science in the interest of improves treatment efficacy.

Biophysics is an evolving, multidisciplinary subject which applies physics to biological systems and promotes an understanding of their physical properties and behaviour. Biophysics: An Introduction, is a concise balanced introduction to this subject. Written in an accessible and readable style, the book takes a fresh, modern approach with the author successfully combining key concepts and theory with relevant applications and examples drawn from the field as a whole. Beginning with a brief introduction to the origins of biophysics, the book takes the reader through successive levels of complexity, from atoms to molecules, structures, systems and ultimately to the behaviour of organisms. The book also includes extensive coverage of biopolymers, biomembranes, biological energy, and nervous systems. The text not only explores basic ideas, but also discusses recent developments, such as protein folding, DNA/RNA conformations, molecular motors, optical tweezers and the biological origins of consciousness and intelligence. Biophysics: An Introduction * Is a carefully structured introduction to biological and medical physics * Provides exercises at the end of each chapter to encourage student understanding Assuming little biological or medical knowledge, this book is invaluable to undergraduate students in physics, biophysics and medical physics. The book is also useful for graduate students and researchers looking for a broad introduction to the subject.

A scientifically proven 9-step program for understanding the dating brain and finding the love of your life Psychiatrist Paul Dobransky presents a patented, clinically proven, easy-to-follow nine-step program that can lead to lasting love. Successful romantic relationships have three phases: 1. Attraction 2. Bonding in friendship 3. An average day in the life of a psychologist can be a frenetic one. A 9 a.m. appointment to help a woman manage a husband who won't take out the garbage quickly shifts to a session with a convicted rapist at 10 a.m. After talking with a child an hour later about his fears of school, the psychologist meets his therapist to deal with his own fears, followed by lunch with a socially-phobic colleague who's already had four martinis by 1 p.m. And it's only Monday. At turns hilarious and heartbreaking, thoughtful and irreverent, Crazy is the incredibly honest and insightful story of how one mental health professional deals with his own personal problems and those of the people he treats. Part exposé, part memoir, it reveals what therapists really think about their profession, their colleagues, their patients, and their own lives.

A Practical Introduction to Stereochemistry Stereoisomers are compounds with the same chemical formula and connectivity but with different arrangements of their atoms in 3-dimensional space. Stereochemistry encompasses the study of stereoisomers and their properties. Despite having an identical chemical formula, stereoisomers can have drastically different biological, medicinal, and chemical properties. Basic Organic Stereochemistry explains in clear, concise terms the concepts and properties of stereoisomers. Ideal both as a text for advanced undergraduate or graduate students and as a handy guide for researchers in industry, this superb text covers: * Polarimetry and optical rotation * Internal coordinates, configuration, and conformation * Nature of stereoisomers * Barriers between stereoisomers and residual stereoisomers * Symmetry operators and symmetry point groups * Properties of stereoisomers and stereoisomer discrimination * Separation of stereoisomers, resolution, and racemization Suitable for students in organic and biological chemistry, Basic Organic Stereochemistry is unparalleled as a convenient text.
