Im Jahr 1864, kurz bevor er mit Schuld und Sühne, Der Idiot, Die Besessenen und Die Brüder Karamasow seine größten Romane schrieb, verfasste Dostojewski mit den düsteren und faszinierenden Aufzeichnungen aus Kellerloch seinen wohl revolutionärsten Roman. In einigen anderen Übersetzungen wird auch der Titel Aufzeichnungen aus dem Dunkel oder Notizen aus dem Untergrund verwendet. Die namenlose Hauptfigur der Erzählung, ist ein ehemaliger Beamter, ein Antiheld par excellence, der sich trotzig in sein Untergrunddasein zurückgezogen hat. In völliger Abkehr von der Gesellschaft schreibt er eine leidenschaftliche, obsessive, in sich widersprüchliche Erzählung, die als verheerender Angriff auf den sozialen Utopismus und als Behauptung der im Wesentlichen irrationalen Natur des Menschen dient. Im zweiten Teil des Romans Bei nassem Schnee erzählt der Mann aus dem Kellerloch von seiner Jugend und einigen prägenden Erlebnissen. Wir erfahren, dass er ein Waisenkind war. Es gab in seiner Jugend keine Person, die ihm irgendeine Art von Liebe oder angemessene menschliche Nähe zuteilwerden ließ. Sein Glaube, dass die Menschen ihn immer als unzureichend ansehen werden, stammt aus seiner Kindheit und der Art und Weise, wie die Menschen ihn einst behandelten. Aber auch im Erwachsenenalter plagen ihn seine Minderwertigkeitsgefühle. Die Prostituierte Liza ist für den Mann aus dem Kellerloch die letzte Chance, mit jemandem eine echte Beziehung zu führen. Nachdem sie unzählige Male von ihm verspottet wird, erkennt Liza, dass seine Persönlichkeit das Ergebnis seiner Unzufriedenheit ist. Immer wenn er versuchte, ein normales Leben zu führen und gut zu sein, wurde er abgelehnt und verspottet. Aber auch gegenüber Liza mangelt es ihm an Vertrauen, und so stößt er sie von sich und zieht sich endgültig in sein Kellerloch zurück.
