Roland Blatt, Jahrgang 1946, im Saarland aufgewachsen und seit einiger Zeit im Rentenalter, war über 4 Jahre bei der Marine und nach seinem Studium in Kiel 38 Jahre Zahnarzt in Schleswig-Holstein. Trotz seines inzwischen vorgerückten Alters zieht es ihn immer noch jeden Sommer auf das Wasser, um die großen, kleinen und ganz kleinen Abenteuer des Segler- und Bootsfahrerdaseins zu erleben und manchmal auch zu erleiden. Der Deutsche Krieg von 1866, auch bekannt als der Deutsch-österreichische Bruderkrieg oder als der Zweite deutsche Einigungskrieg, ist sicher vielen Menschen in Deutschland nicht oder nicht mehr präsent. Und doch war dieser Deutsche Krieg eine Episode in der deutschen Geschichte von großer Tragweite. Das hier vorliegende Booklet zeichnet die Ereignisse von 1866 anhand von persönlichen Aufzeichnungen eines der Beteiligten nach. Es war der preußische Infanterist und Landwehrmann Johann Georg Blatt aus Saarbrücken, der auf dem westlichen Kriegsschauplatz diesen Krieg vom Anfang bis zum Ende mitgemacht hat und trotz aller Strapazen und Beschwernisse ein Tagebuch geführt hat, das sich, obwohl das Haus im Bombenkrieg des Jahres 1944 verloren ging, in der Familie erhalten hat. Der durchaus bemerkenswerte Text aus der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde vom Autor kommentiert und in den allgemein- und militärhistorischen Zusammenhang gestellt, sodass bei allen, die dieses Booklet lesen, ein sachgerechter Eindruck vom dramatischen Geschehen dieser Zeit entsteht.

Es war die Hochphase des Kalten Krieges, doch an Krieg dachte wirklich niemand, zumindest nicht in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland jener Tage in der Mitte der 1960er Jahre. Dennoch wurde aufgerüstet, die Bundeswehr strebte eine Stärke von 498.000 Soldaten an, und in der Marine wurden neue Schiffe in Dienst gestellt, für die Mariner gebraucht wurden. In dieser Zeit ging der Autor Roland Blatt als Matrose "zum Bund" und erlebte danach in Glückstadt eine Grundausbildung, die weit mehr war, als nur eine Ausbildung für den Rest der 4 Jahre, für die er sich verpflichtet hatte. Mit dem Schwung und der Unbekümmertheit der Jugend wurde er in Glückstadt mit einem ganz anderen Leben konfrontiert, als er es bisher gewohnt war. Und dennoch hatte er, so scheint es jedenfalls, wenn man dieses Buch liest, fast nie die gute Laune verloren. Das Buch wirft einen Blick auf die deutsche Bundesmarine, die es in dieser Form längst nicht mehr gibt, und ganz nebenbei ist dieses Buch auch eine Hommage an Glückstadt und die Landschaft an der Unterelbe.
