Secara etimologi, kata culture atau budaya berasal dari bahasa latin yaitu colere yang berarti mengolah atau mengerjakan. Kata culture dalam bahasa inggris juga dapat diartikan sebagai kultur dalam bahasa Indonesia dan berarti kebudayaan. Selain secara etimologi, beberapa ahli turut mengemukakan pendapatnya mengenai pengertian kebudayaan. Berikut pendapat para ahli mengenai pengertian kebudayaan. Masyarakat Jawa adalah masyarakat yang berdomisili di pulau jawa daerah Jawa Tengah, Yogyakarta dan Jawa Timur. Golongan masyarakat ini memiliki sistem nilai bermasyarakat priyayi, sodagar dan kaula.Kaum priyayi biasanya berdomisili di daerah perkotaan dengan sistem nilai bermasyarakat sebagai golongan elite, sedangkan kaula ada yang berdomisili di kota ada pula yang berdomisili di desa golongan ini sebagai pekerja kasar atau pengikut dari kaum priyayi biasa disebut sebagai tiyang alit. Budaya kaum priyayi dan sodagar dikenal dengan budaya halus atau klasik sedang budaya tiyang alit dikenal dengan budaya kasar atau kerakyatan (Koentjaraningrat. 1994: 229)
