In January of 1671 the pirate Henry Morgan captured and sacked Panama City. Morgan took considerable booty Panama but missed the fabled Golden Altar, a priceless artifact which a local priest had painted with creosote to avoid detection. This story tells of Morgans rage when he discovered what he had overlooked. Continuing, it relates how a descendant, Major Henry Morgan, a British Army officer who passed through Panama after the Falklands War, returns in 1985 to steal the altar. Descriptions of Morgans raid in 1671 and of the City of Panama in 1985 are accurate. However, the unviolated Golden Altar still resides today in the church of San Jose, close to where General Manuel Antonio Noriegas infamous Defense Forces headquarters stood until 1989, when the U.S. invasion destroyed the complex, and life in Panama changed forever.

This lavishly illustrated, bilingual art book presents drawings by Ramón Casas in the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections at the Northwestern University Library and oil paintings by Casas from private collections and the Art Institute of Chicago. Charles Deering and Ramón Casas follows the development and dramatic dissolution of a three-way friendship that connected the Spanish painter Ramón Casas (1866–1932); the Chicago industrialist Charles Deering (1852–1927), who was a collector and admirer of Casas’s work as well as a patron of Northwestern University; and the Spanish artist Miguel Utrillo (1862–1934), Casas’s lifelong friend and the father of the French painter Maurice Utrillo. Casas introduced Deering to Sitges, a beach town near Barcelona, Spain, where the latter created a palatial estate with a museum to house his art collection. Miguel Utrillo served as director of the museum. The text explores the treasures housed at Maricel and what happened among the three men that led Casas to abandon Utrillo and Deering to depart Spain, taking his art collection with him.

A family seated round the fireplace Singing and making merry; A sprightly waltz played with grace Noche Buena brings us all the magic of the Christmas season as seen through the eyes of the Hispanic Americans who celebrate it. Christmas is at times a universal story, and many of the images here are recognizable across cultures. We hear and see proud, joyful singing; the adoration of the Infant Jesus; and the peaceful strains of Adeste Fidelis. But here as well are the rich traditions and legends specific to the Hispanic culture, such as the celebration of the posadas for nine nights leading up to Christmas, with candy raining down from colorful swinging piñatas, egg shells filled with confetti, and beautiful paper lanterns crafted to illuminate the town on Christmas Eve. There is the "Legend of the Poinsettia" where a poor child embarrassed by the modesty of his gift for the Christ Child sheds tears on the dull green leaves of the familiar plant, thereby miraculously transforming them to a brilliant red. And here too are hopeful children singing "If You Give Me Meat Pies," asking for the reward of warm meat pies and rice pudding in return for their sweet caroling. Thirty-six inspiring literary selections comprise this enchanting collection of works from Mexican, Colombian, Cuban, and Puerto Rican writers--writers who represent the range of Hispanic minority groups in the United States. Through these stories, traditional tales, songs, and poetry, readers gain a true understanding of the importance of the Christmas holiday within the Hispanic community, and begin to grasp the issues that inform the Hispanic American creative process--issues such as communal identity, patriotism, poverty, assimilation, and religion. With vivid illustrations and original Spanish text for all poetry, this fascinating anthology will inform readers of all cultural backgrounds, and give them the opportunity to celebrate this cherished time with a newly extended family.

Amen

In his historical satirical novel Candide, Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) presented a fanciful vision of the Jesuit missions established among the Guaraní in parts of what today are Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. Some scholars have characterized the missions as having been a socialist utopia, or an independent republic located on the fringes of Spanish territory in South America. What was the reality? This study presents a detailed analysis of one of the Jesuit missions, Los Santos Mártires del Japón, and the story of the creation of mission communities on a frontier contested by Spain and Portugal during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It documents the historical realities of the Jesuit missions, their patterns of development, and the demographic consequences for the mission populations of military conflict.

Missions And The Frontiers Of Spanish America written by Robert Howard Jackson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.

Robert Jackson's tenth and most ambitious book explores the factors and dispels the false ideas around how the fringes of Spain's empire in the Americas developed. He details how environmental differences and socio-cultural variations had a controlling influence on development of the missions in each region and how these factors explain the striking differences in the mission structure. Jackson's extensive on-site research covers New Mexico (1598-1580 and 1696-1833), the Rio de la Plata region (1609-1848), the Primeria Alta Region (1687-1833), Texas (1690-1695 and 1716-1815), Baja California (1697-1833), and Alta California (1769-1833). Missions and the Frontiers of Spanish America is a readable and generously illustrated book that puts the role of the missions, missionaries, and indigenous peoples into a broader historical context.
